Bengaluru: Ramya accuses BJP MPs of operating troll against opponents

Daijiworld Media Network - Bengaluru (SP)

Bengaluru, Sep 12: Actress and Congress leader, Ramya, has accused two BJP MPs of hiring people and entrusting them the work of trolling their political adversaries. She said that one of these MPs is from Mysuru-Mandya region while the other is a Rajya Sabha member from the city.

Ramya, who is head of Congress social media and digital communication team, claimed that these MPs have created different handles with the help of agencies that have been recruited, to launch groups of active trollers.

Ramya, a popular movie star, also opined that journalist, Gauri Lankesh, a bitter critic of BJP, was actively trolled. She points at various posts about conspiracy theories and such other things after the death of Gauri in social media.

Reacting to Ramya's comments, Mysuru-Kodagu MP, Pratap Simha, said that people who have nothing to do get involved with trolling. He said that Congress chose Ramya to troll opponents as they know that she has no work either in cinema or in politics. He pointed out that BJP has no need to undertake trolling as it rules at the centre and has most states under its belt.

Rajya Sabha member from the city, Rajeev chandrashekhar, also has dismissed Ramya's allegations, clarifying that he has not hired anyone for trolling.

BJP may have created a monster with its troll army, but Amit Shah understands it may turn on them one day.
A WhatsApp video of two boys being beaten helped set off the 2013 riots in Muzaffarnagar. That the video was two years old was discovered later. By then at least 60 people were dead and 50,000 homeless.

After a Facebook post that Muslims found blasphemous triggered a clash in Basirhat, images of the 2002 riots in Gujarat were passed off as 2017 Bashirhat on WhatsApp and Facebook to inflame passions. A BJP spokesperson used one of those images to call for protests at Jantar Mantar.

Fake news does not always cause riots. It can just help deepen polarization. A Guatemalan mob beating up a woman becomes a Marwari woman being beaten up by Muslim men. The murder of an Awami League leader in Bangladesh is passed off as a Hindu man being killed by Muslims in Bihar with the message: "Share this video so much that it reaches Narendra Modi. If you are a true Hindu, then forward it." When Pakistan defeated India in the Champions trophy final, videos of Indian Muslims celebrating did the rounds of social media though they were fake. One was old. The other was from Karachi.

WhatsApp news can help deliver votes as well.BJP IT cell member said their priority was to enter at least 5,000 WhatsApp groups before the elections. As it happened, by the time UP went to the polls they had access to over 9,000 groups with an average of 150 members per group.

A dangerous online army of lakhs is following us, which is not even in our control. What happens if a Frankenstein's monster grown humungous on its steady diet of fake news one day turns on its master?

The strategy that worked in UP is tried in Karnataka.
