Heavy rain: Bengaluru partially marooned, overflowing drains turn roads into rivers

Daijiworld Media Network - Bengaluru (SP)

Bengaluru, Sep 11: Due to heavy rain that has been lashing the capital city of Karnataka since some days, several parts got inundated on Sunday September 11. Southern part of the city was virtually water-locked and people got stranded due to rising water level on the roads. After water level rose in roads, water gushed in a number of residential extensions.

A house in Devarajeevanahalli collapsed due to heavy rain, injuring two persons. Buildings also collapsed at Gopalapura on Magadi Road and near Hulimavu. However, as no one was inside, no loss or life or injury were reported. Passengers who were stranded for long in two KSRTC buses which partially drowned in water on Mysuru Road were rescued with the help of boats. Mysuru road was deep under water as Vrishabhavati main canal overflowed. The entire Mysuru road resembled a lake near Kengeri Jnanabharathi.

As Dubasipalya pond overflowed due to heavy rain received during the night, the Vrishabhavati main canal was flooded with water, which then overflowed into Mysuru road.

Traffic police were hard hit, as they had to struggle to lend a semblance of order to traffic. After traffic jam occurred at Mysuru Road and vehicles got stranded for hours, police struggled hard to divert the vehicles through other roads. After water entered the government hospital at Kaggalipura, 30 patients in the hospital were shifted elsewhere.

It is gathered that the fact that huge holes which dotted Vrishabhavati main canal on the roadside at a frequency of about ten metres fro one another, had got sealed after dirt, weeds, etc flowed in with water and got trapped in these holes. As the road is located at a level lower than the canal, the overflowing water entered the road. The sheets erected to support metro railway pillar work that is in progress at this area complicated the situation further as water got trapped there. Rescue team and staff of Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagarra Palike cleared the holes of dirt and allowed water to flow out. In course of time, water drained out of the road and paved way for traffic as rain intensity too dwindled.

Two students drowned in an agricultural pond in Biganenahalli, Turuvekere taluk in Tumkur district. A mother-daughter duo also drowned in agricultural pond near Bangarpet in Kolar district. Two young men who tried to swim in a well in Bidar died.

People are left to languish in Bombay since the latest floods there.
Hope this won't happen in Bangalore.

In due course of time these road rivers turn into seas. So better divert this excess water to drought hit areas instead from Nethravathi by spending crores of rupees nor from our Arabian sea.

Unfortunately, due to various factors like unplanned/uncontrolled growth of the city, destruction of its water-bodies, allowing/tolerance of illegal constructions with a corrupt intent, blocking of flood-water pathways, as well as very poor maintenance of its infrastructure, Namma Bengaluru has graduated from 'Garden City', to 'Garbage City' and now, to 'Drowning City'.

The degree of callousness and mismanagement by the City's governing bodies and successive Governments during the past 10-15 years, is hard to imagine. For example, the problems of the highly polluted Bellandur lake (which are purely man-made) may take 5-7 years to overcome. Unless all of Bengaluru's stake-holders put their heads together and act fast and strongly to put an end to this mess, there is little hope for this metropolis, since we are responsible to a greater extent. It wouldn't be fair to blame nature for the present sad state of affairs.

Previous year BBMP carried out demolition of legal/illegal buildings to save Raja Kaluvey and lakes in order to avoid any floods on roads. Hope their plan wasn't successful. By looking at this year flood BBMP may come up with more demolition of buildings. Folks be careful...

All these excessive rain water should be collected and pumped to other nearby places (where there is no water) real time..
    It should be implemented scientifically...
Then our city will be smart...

Sri-elder, pumping this water to needy area is good suggestion. Practically impossible to pump storm water...may cost billions and no one knows and are prepared for such rain.....rest of the year no work for this facility!!?

    Note down my idea:-

Identify the most low level area in Bangalore. Vacate that area. Construct one big dam. Channel all the pure rain water to that dam. Pump water to nearby areas on need basis. It can be worked out.

By the way Bangalore receives good amount of rain..

And low level areas of the city should be identified and vacated. These kind of problems will repeat even after 100 years if not addressed correctly...

    Not begging.

Asking for the right of Karnataka tax payer money taken by your bosses. Don't show off your useless schemes with our tax payer money. Let Karnataka people use it for productive purpose when required.

@readerwriter Pune,we always have someone to blame mostly a politician who is not so favourit. But onething we forget we too are a part of this natures catastroph .No politician can do anything against natures disaster. It is not only in India ,but all over world.we too do things that is favourable for this.we want luxury, cars with diesel, and cut trees ,even not care if it is prohibited.we want big buildings .water is rare, not using with care but full open tape etc.So now stop blaming others see what we ourselves can do for nature.Help people who are in need of help.USA is flooded.Portugal is burning.Do you think our politicians are cause of this?

Such sudden rain creates problem in any part of the world. Do not be under illusion that it happens in Congress ruled state because you are hard core BJP supporter. Have you not seen water clogs in Sharjha and Ajman when it rained heavy suddenly once in few years. Like in any city, Bangalore too tried to get the water cleared and article shows they had good success! Pity at your blame game !!

So what do you have to say about the washed out roads during the recent rains in Gujarat, which were newly constructed spending crores of tax payers money? I don't think that was Siddu's contribution? Bhakts at that time claimed that it was a natural disaster. You cannot have it both ways, you see. What about Mumbai under Fadnavis two weeks ago?
