Bengaluru: It's official - From Jan 2018, Karnataka to have 49 new taluks

Daijiworld Media Network - Bengaliuru (SP)

Bengaluru, Sep 7: The state government, through an order dated September 6, 2017, gave its in-principle administrative approval for the creation of 49 new taluks in the state. The new taluks will come into existence with effect from January 2018, the order stated. These include Moodbidri and Kadaba in Dakshina Kannada, and Brahmavar, Hebri, Kaup and Byndoor in Udupi district.

In consonance thereof, the government has issued permission to the revenue department to open new taluk offices in these proposed taluks, and to other departments to open taluk level offices with the concurrence of the department of finance in a phased manner. The expenses connected thereto have been permitted to be absorbed under the head, provision for which has already been made in the budget for the year 2017-18. The order said that this order has been issued in accordance with the concurrence given by finance department vide its note dated April 1, 2017.

The creation of new taluks has been affected as per announcement made in the budgetary speech for the year 2017-18 in which it was stated that 49 new taluks would be created during the current year, considering geographical and administrative needs, and to meet long-pending demand for new taluks.

Towards reorganization of the existing taluks to provide an affective and able administration in the state and to provide services to the general public as per their convenience, Vasudeva Rao Commission had been formed in 1973, T M Hundekar Committee in 1984, P C Gaddigoudar Committee in1986, and taluk reorganization committee headed by M B Prakash in 2007. These committees had recommended for creation of 40 out of the proposed 49 taluks. None of them had recommended for setting up of the other nine taluks.

For providing affective administration, it is imperative to create taluks having reasonable areas and population sizes to provide services to people in a convenient manner. This helps taluk level officials to visit villages and meet the villagers. They also help villagers to contact taluk level officials. As such, a need to reorganize the existing taluks was felt, and an order for the same was issued, the government order explains.

Expect higher taxes, corruption, bribery, higher real estate prices, leading to higher inflation.

Waste of public money by hiring corrupt people.

why not use e-commerce, e-governance and digital technology at village level giving opportunity to villagers instead of outsiders that leads to waste of public funds, fueling corruption?

For example, Hebri, Brahmavar, etc. mostly contribute agricultural income only.

Hebri was much needed.....When they announced three taluks in last budget they haven't included hebri...They have split smallest taluk of Udupi to three by political influence however now they have corrected their mistakes....Now Udupi district should lobby for CMC status to Kundapura and karkala by including near grampanchayats......

Well done. A long long standing desire of both Dakshina kannada and Udupi Districts is fulfilled now. The main intention of the Govt.for the reorganisation of the existing Taluks is to provide good services to the general public as per their convenience it is said. But the Govt.has to keep up this always. Then only the purpose formation of 49 new Taluks will be served.
