Mangaluru, Sep 4: Three out of eight engineering students who went to swim in river Netravati on Monday, September 4 met watery graves. Five of them were rescued.
The incident took place at Nadugudde, Innoli near Konaje.
Vikhil (21) alias Vikki from Beltangady, Shubham (22), a native of Bihar, and Sri Ram (21) from Chitradurga were washed away by the currents.
As it was holiday on account of Onam, eight students of a private college planned to visit Shree Somanatheshwara Temple at Inoli. They took a boat near Adyar and reached near Nadugudde. Before going to the temple, they decided to bathe in the river. That is when tragedy struck.
Among the eight, it was Sri Ram who stepped into the water first. But he lost his balance and fell into the water. Vikkil who saw him struggle jumped in to rescue Sri Ram, but he too got washed away. Shubham then went to their rescue, but like the other two, met watery grave.
Five of them were saved by the locals.
Bodies of all the three students have been retrieved with the help of locals, police and fire personnel.
