Mangaluru, Sep 2: Congress leader and former chief minister Dr M Veerappa Moily on Saturday September 2 slammed the Narendra Modi-led government in the centre over fall in GDP growth to 3-year low of 5.7% and said that former Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh's statement about demonetisation being a disaster for the economy had come true.
Addressing reporters here, Moily said, "The present union government has utterly failed in every sector, be it defence, economy, or GDP growth which has deflated. Naxal activities and border clashes are still continuing. Since demonetisation, the quarterly GDP growth has come down drastically and people have still not recovered from that surgical strike on the economy. GDP ratio has never come down below 7%, but after the revised methodology of GDP growth it is found that we are at 5.7%. If the methodology had not been revised, then the GDP would have been as low as 3.5%.
"Former PM Dr Manmohan Singh's statement on demonetisation being a disaster has come true. BJP is known for making promises, but not for delivering them. Narendra Modi is a Prime Minister of events and not in terms of performance of duties expected of him," he added.
On his party's preparation for the next Assembly polls in Karnataka, he said, "We have lined up several programmes to strengthen the party at the booth level in the entire state, and so far, 90% of the booths have been reconstructed, and the rest 10% will be done soon. CM Siddaramaiah has successfully completed four years of his administration by introducing people-friendly schemes. From September 10, we will distribute brochures to the voters regarding the achievements of the government. We are confident that people will support Congress yet again."
Prior to the press meet, Moily addressed a Congress party workers' meet at the party's district office.
District in-charge minister Ramanath Rai, minister for food and civil supplies U T Khader, chief whip of Legislative Council Ivan D'Souza, district Congress president Harish Kumar, mayor Kavitha Sanil and others were present.

Earlier in the evening, Veerappa Moily visited the government-run Lady Goshen Hospital which has been under renovation from long.
Addressing reporters, Moily said, "This is a joint project of the state government, and ONGC-MRPL. Rs 21 crore was sanctioned for this project and work has been completed. Now MRPL has sanctioned Rs 1.1 crore for the purpose of purchasing equipment. Thehe hospital has vast history of 175 years, and this is one of the most important of its projects. The old building was in a pathetic condition and there was no proper equipment. But with the support of MRPL and ONGC, we have constructed this new building, and it is set to be inaugurated in the month of November."
