Mangaluru:  220 cases booked in a day for not issuing tickets in buses

Mangaluru, Sep 2: Traffic police who swung into action in Mangaluru on Friday, September 1 checked 196 buses, registered 220 complaints of violation of rules and collected Rs 18,600 as fine. 

The Regional Transport authority had called a meeting of bus owners on August 8 following complaints from people that tickets are not being issued and excess fare was being collected. As ticketing machines enable transparency in fare, the authority had fixed August 31 as the deadline for it. The inspections started on Friday as the deadline is over. 

While checking 196 buses, it was found that only three or four persons in every bus were issued tickets. 

“The inspections will continue,” said ACP (traffic) Tilak Chandra speaking to media.

    Mostly some one in department needs urgent transfer from Mangalore.Thats why they are filing Cases against buses..... otherwise usually all buses pay "mamuli"of minimum 500 per month to every station they cross....

    It was always like this having pros and cons as far as commuter convenience is concerned. But with time we now definately need to change . A regulated system needs to be put in place. I believe the private bus owners should take on the responsibility as thier customers are now more educated and more demanding than before. If they dont they will surely be out of businesses. I see KSRTC already eyeing this sector and have taken the baby step. Slowly they will take over and these private buses will vanish like the Kodak films.

    Its time to switch over to conductor less / ticket less journey. Why dont private bus operators in mlore follow dubai model transport system where no conductor or paper ticket in operation. Just a card "nol" by name. You can travel on metro, local/inter city bus as well as water taxi with easy top up options such as kiosks, credi/debit card etc., electronic tagging machune on vehicle will control monetory transations meana zero error.

    Mangalore city bus service ?
    Is it a service ? Rather torchure to public.
    Most arrogant, uncivilized, rules breaking, misbehaving, too much honking, too much whistling, conductor always on foot board.
    Not seen anywhere in the world.
    No comparison.

    Those who are complaining about public transport here have not used buses elsewhere. Compared to a lot of other cities, Mangalore does have a better bus service system. Of course, there are problems, but it isn't that bad.
    Regarding tickets, it's unfair to expect the conductors to issue tickets in a crowded bus. Anyone who has travelled during peak hours would obviously understand.

    regulations need to be put in place.
    Reasons against private buses (obvious and resurfacing ones) -
    1) Rash driving
    2) Arrogant and restless behaviour with senior citizens
    3)Discriminatory pricing (some get charged Rs 5 for several stops, irregular passengers get charged Rs 9 for one stop)
    4) Thick back smoke spewed out on smaller vehicles
    5) Wrong routes
    6) No particular bus stand, They stop wherever they want and however long they want.
    7) Overspeed and compete with each other (no civic responsibility)
    8) And Raghav, if you've ever rode on the city or rode pillion atleast, you will know what I'm talking about - the horror of having an overspeeding bus behind you constantly honking.
    9) no accountability

    I'm not vouching for private transport. I think Public transport should be the first option, otherwise the corporation just chops trees and widens road to make way for more traffic. That I think unwise. But Public transport nonetheless must be regulated so people's faith in them is restored.

    Why private buses are a menace? They don't have a sense of accountability. And they have a strong system in place to ensure their sustenance in the city, It's not so difficult to get rid of them. Besides, when mishaps happened, drivers and conductors are first to get trashed, not people on top who allow such menace to run.

    These guys are underpaid though they work more than 12 hrs per day and shout throughout the day..it should be ok if they are making small amount out of it for their pocket money..Why bus owners should enjoy all the profits?

    Pinto Sir - Small salary days are gone for these pvt bus drivers / conductors . Now all are working under contract basis say the driver & conductor has to pay X amount to the owner . After all expenses paid most of these guys makes around 1000 Plus per day .
