Bengaluru, Aug 31: The violence, arson and rioting by the supporters of Dera Saccha Sauda chief and self-styled godman Baba Gumeet Ram Rahim in Haryana over the CBI Special Court’s findings holding the godman guilty in two rape cases was nothing but state-sponsored atrocity, AICC General Secretary K C Venugopal said.
Speaking to reporters in Bengaluru on Thursday, the Congress party in charge for Karnataka took the Manoharlal Kattar government in Haryana to task for its abject surrender to the lumpen elements and failure to take any action against perpetrators of violence.
"What the country witnessed last week in Haryana was a total failure of law and order situation. We (Congress) call it as a state-sponsored-atrocity as Haryana government failed to take action to stop thousands of people, who organised arms and ammunitions, to perpetrate violence, before the court verdict was out in Ram Rahim Singh rape case," he said.
Venugopal said the country is ashamed of such an action by Haryana government which was pulled up by Haryana High Court.
The AICC General Secretary said BJP National President Amit Shah, was directly involved in manipulating Rajya Sabha elections in Gujarat has no moral right to call Siddaramaiah government as the most corrupt government in the country.
"There are no major allegations against Siddaramaiah government," he said.
Shah had called Siddaramaiah government as the most corrupt ever in political annals of the country.
Venugopal said Congress is ready to fight BJPs polarisation politics in the state and expressed confidence that the secular people here would vote for the Congress in 2018 assembly elections and also in the general elections in 2019.
Countering the charges against Congress for playing polarisation politics through separate Lingayat religion and anti-Hindi issues, Venugopal said, in fact, it is the BJP who is playing such politics by "imposing" Hindi.
"The BJP is creating polarisation in all issues. Everybody loves their language. I got a letter written in Hindi last week from rural development minister. They are imposing Hindi which is not acceptable," he said.
During UPA rule, MPs were getting letters in both, Hindi and English languages, he said.
On Lingayat religion row, Venupgopal said Congress is not behind it, as it is for the community to decide on the issue. "One should not drag Congress into this controversy,' he said.
