Udupi: Speeding bus injures woman, child in auto; driver claims 'brake fail', locals refute

Udupi, Aug 30: Three persons including a child were injured after a speeding bus rammed into an auto rickshaw in which they were travelling, at Shiribeedu here on Wednesday Auugust 30.

Arathi (42) and her daughter Sunaina (10) were returning by auto rickshaw from a visit to Adarsh hospital when the accident took place.

It is learnt that when they reached Shiribeedu, a Durgamba express bus plying from Udupi to Kundapur rammed into the auto rickshaw from behind. The road is one-way.

The impact of the accident was such that the auto rickshaw overturned, causing grievous injuries to Arathi and Sunaina.

Auto driver Sandeep also sustained injuries.

As soon as the accident occured, locals and passersby rushed to help the victims, and shifted them to hospital.

The bus driver claimed that his vehicle had a brake fail, but the people said that on inspection of the bus, the brake did not appear to have any defect.

The locals said that the accident occured because the bus was being driven at a high speed on the narrow, one-way road.

Auto driver Sandeep had taken the mother and the daughter to Adarsh hospital and was bringing them back.

Following the accident, traffic was affected for sometime.

A case has been registered.

    First of all, I am hoping the auto rickshaw driver and family is safe and in good health, and that the little child is not affected by what happened.

    Now about the buses. We need the buses.

    Lets start with the owner. They hire the best drivers. In most cases they pick the driver of the day at the bustop after doing thorough background checks. That is why you see a new driver every day.

    Then about the buses itself. Owners take good care of the buses. They are washed daily, smells good with fresh flowers, and plantain trees in the front blocking his mirrors, and decorations all over like election notices, posters of movies suitable for little children, the best soft seats. Have you heard the music they play? They play the latest and greatest and the they have 7.1 Channel sound system. Even the theaters cannot afford it!

    The driver and the conductors are the best people on earth. The driver wears nice uniforms - I think they still have the flaps over their shoulder, then the conductors and his side kicks entertains all of us with their sweet whistles. Then they constantly talk direct and remind us to be considerate to others, and keep repeating checking on us.

    The entire bus staff are honest, kind and patient! At the beginning of the shift they inspect the vehicle with attention to detail. They wait at every stop for ever and ever just to ensure everone is picked up. Then they realize that their regular passengers, their friends, and other hard working Mangloreans are not picked up on time. So they rush to the next stop, even if that means they have to cut through traffic, honk, run over people, animals etc. etc. We understan that - that is totally OK!

    Riding the bus is like going to the park and enjoying a rollercoaster ride for dirt cheap. How much is the ticket? Is it still 85 paise for the ride?

    For those who ride the buses, you know what I meant. Let us hope things get better and precious lives are saved! It starts today.

    Whole world knows "the accident occurred because the bus was being driven at a high speed on the narrow, one-way road." it's evident in all the places... the havoc driving these private bus drivers in to... anything may happen... it's just luck and God escapes us from them. But unfortunately not even a word gets raised on this issue in the RTO Bus owners meet. Everything is smooth and a meeting is a joke. Police , RTO, all authorities are sitting mum. with Bus owner's assured support only these evil drivers drive reckless. no fear of traffic rules, no fear of other vehicles, no fear of police people on the road maintaining the traffic, no fear of anybody... they fight with anybody, blast anybody, threat anybody,,, honk anywhere... horn anywhere... keep honking till next bus moves irrespective of while public around they are troubling... nothing.... just drive reckless and kill as many as people...

    Targets are set by the owners.
    Drivers have to reach the targets.
    They drive rashly, trying to overtake each and every vehicle. .
    Accidents happen.
    Drivers are arrested or fired out.
    Owners will get their buses back.
    They hire the same driver or new driver then bus is ready on raid to repeat the challenge. ..

    It is always the same.Private buses ,or govt buses simply run the buses as if they are on national highways.No matter whether other vehicles are in front or not.Hardly they follow rules.Best is better to install a micro chip which doesnt allow to race on the roads more than allowed the milage.Afterall we are in computer age.Mangalore traffic dept must now handle.It is nonsense to say brakefail.When brakefails ,doesnt he have a handbrake?cancel his licence.otherwise they never learn.

    Thanks to Umesh Marpalli of Daijiword for the pictures which show the reckless and the speed of the bus which made the auto to overturn and injured two passengers and the auto driver. I wish them a speedy recovery. Only a thorough investigation will reveal whether there was a brake failure.

    Speed and high compitation which lead to more accidents..

    These bus drivers are most irresponsible people in the society. How can break fail as soon as he starts from his previous stop. Rash driving and horrible vacuum horns are going out of control. These buses drivers will drive in maximum speed with continuously honking inside the city limit. Bus drivers licence must be canceled and they must not be allowed to drive again. Police dept must take strict action against the owner and drivers.

    all happening because of sleeping police and traffic department .many are there in police department in udupi but we cant see any one of them in Road other then collecting money for the government .

    Abolish the private buses in Mangalore and Udupi, then see the difference. Now the owner will bail the driver if the driver is arrested.

    These express buses are a nuisance, just because the drivers of these buses are always in a hurry and over speeding most of the time….I don’t think they will ever improve! RTO has to act swiftly to cancel their driving licenses at least for a year to discipline them

    Express buses over speeding, ramming into smaller vehicles, killing people since so many years. till today nothing has changed, do not understand why do people of DK & Udupi not taking this menace seriously, why not people staging protest. when we drive cars between Udupi - Mangalore always scared of these express drivers, many a times i have driven off the road into the fields.

    Mostly all buses in Mangalore, Udupi, Kundapura etc. are recruited with maniac moron drivers who care-a-damn to the passengers or elsewhere. They think they will get a certificate of appreciation / cash incentives if they reach before their estimated time. Furthermore they think that the roads are their father's property and they can\t be questioned. This is a brazen mawaali culture which has to be stopped under any condition so that some decorum and civic sense is maintained and will give the locales a sense of confidence in commuting by the public transport.

    I can with a great deal of confidence say that no other parts of the country does one see so rash driving as compared to Karnataka..

    We should demand that such a crazy culture stops before it is too late and things go out of control.

    So the next step from Durgamba will be pay some extra cash to the department release the bus. Back on track from tomorrow. Who cares express busses rule the roads. And we just watch.
