Mangaluru, Aug 24: The festive fever rises high as Mangaluru is all set to rejoice Ganesh Chaturthi on Friday, August 25.
Streets of Mangaluru are packed with flowers, sugar canes and other items that highlight the celebrations. This time around Ganesh Chaturthi will coincide with the weekend, which makes it favourable for the students and working professionals who have settled in other places to join the celebration back home.
Prices skyrocket
Street vendors are seen spreading out in every streets of Mangaluru with a variety of flowers and other essentials for the celebration. As years pass by, the prices keep up sky rocketing especially for the necessary items needed for the celebration.
Sugarcane prices this year were as high as Rs 50 per cane as against Rs 30 from last year. Similarly, flowers, vegetables, and fruits had a huge demand compared to other days. And as demand increases the price too rises.
Ganesh Idols
Nearly 30 Ganesh idols were installed in and around Mangaluru. Ganesha idol at Sanghaniketan is the oldest, and Ganesha Chaturthi at Nehru Maidan, is considered the best.
Several idols of lord Ganesh are prepared by refined artists. Devotees gather to install idols and offer Puja at their homes and in public places, in and around the city.
As Ganesha Chaturthi is just around the corner, the central market remains jam-packed with people buying festive articles, resulting in congested roads towards the city.
Peace meeting
Police commissioner T R Suresh has given detailed information regarding precautionary measures, the do’s and don’ts of fire safety, at the place of installation of the idols.
