Mangaluru, Aug 19: Former district manager of food and civil supplies department of Dakshina Kannada district, Varada Iyengar, was found guilty and sentenced by the district and sessions court here on Friday August 19.

Iyengar (65), now retired, has been handed down a year of simple imprisonment and fine of Rs 30,000.

In 2010, Iyengar reportedly was caught red-handed when accepting bribe of Rs 10,000 from a person named Gururaj Shenoy relating to supply of green gram to the department. Lokayukta officials had raided the spot when the official was accepting bribe. A Lokayukta team led by the then inspector, Uday Nayak, had conducted the raid and arrested the accused.

Judge of the court, Muralidhar Pai, held Iyengar guilty of violating certain sections of Prevention of Corruption Act and pronounced the punishment as prescribed in the act.

Special public prosecutor, K S N Rajesh, had argued the case on behalf of Lokayukta.

Why punish one person. Finalise all the pending cases before their retirement and send them to jail. Why jail a person after his retirement. The action is not justifiable.

Don't leave the punishment at that. Go after Iyengar's ill-gotten gains under the Proceeds of Crime Act. If he had accepted ten thousand rupees as a bribe in one instance, especially towards the end of his service career, who knows how much he has pocketed over the years he was in service.
