Udupi, Aug 18: The Supreme Court on Friday August 18 refused to stay investigations against Atul Rao, one of the key persons allegedly involved in the circumstances leading to the death of former MLA Raghupati Bhat's wife Padmapriya.
Padmapriya Bhat had gone missing on June 11, 2008, and a few days later, was traced to a hotel in New Delhi where she was found hanging in an alleged case of suicide. It was speculated that she had run away with the help of Atul Rao and a former driver of Raghupati Bhat. Atul went missing after Padmapriya's death came to light, but he was soon arrested by the Delhi police.
In December 2014, a Bengaluru court ordered COD police to re-investigate the role of Atul Rao in the case. He had been booked under various sections relating to illicit relationship, abetting of suicde, abduction, fraud, using fake documents etc in the above case. But the COD police had omitted these allegations when filing the charge sheet. Raghupati Bhat had approached the court seeking directions to investigate the case from all these angles. The state high court, after examining the contentions, had ordered the third additional court in Bengaluru to examine Atul Rao's involvement.
A petition was later filed in the Supreme Court seeking stay on investigation into Atul's role in the case. On Friday, a three-member Supreme Court bench headed by Justice Dipak Misra dismissed the plea.
