Sea water turns green at Karwar, people worried

Daijiworld Media Network-Karwar (RJP)

Karwar, Aug 18: People were seen worried after they observed sea water at the Rabindranath Tagore beach here turned green on Thursday, August 17.

First the change was noticed by some fishermen. They immediately called up the office of the ocean biology study centre.

Chairman of biology study centre Jagannath N Rathod, assistant professor Shivakumar Haragi and their students came to the spot and examined the contaminated water.

Jagannath explained that the green colour of sea water with stench could be because of the minerals that get mixed with the water due to rainwater and sewage coming into the sea and the subsequent growth of algae.

The experts opined that there is no danger to the sea creatures due to the contamination. They asked the fisherfolk not to worry.

Experts also said that water has never turned green in the last 10 years. They advised that necessary steps should be taken to prevent water contamination in the future.

“We will conduct tests on the water samples at their lab and submit a report on the contaminants in the samples to the deputy commissioner,” informed Shivakumar Haragi.

It is strange for the sea water to turn green. It is a cause for people to get worried. Experts in this field should find out the reason and make the minds of the people clear that it is not harmful in any way.

I had observed similar experience in Gulf Oman. It is due to deplete in oxygen and change internal current.
The lack of oxygen may threaten the marine life in such water. Any effluent from the untreated sewage may aide to the growth of algae.
One reason may be due to natural flow of water, lack of rain or huge construction which blocks the tide.
Nuclear plant on one side and naval base on the other, Tagore is the only left option for Karwar residence. It is alarming need immediate attention.
