Mangaluru, Aug 16: Miscreants smashed windshields and damaged eight cars parked near Yenepoya Hospital at Deralakatte here in the early hours of Sunday August 14. The incident came to light with some delay on Wednesday August 16, after a complaint was filed.
The cars were parked in the parking lot alloted near the hospital. As the parking areas inside the hospital campus is fully occupied, the hospital authorities have rented the space outside the campus for parking. A group of miscreants damaged eight cars that were parked there.
According to a complaint filed in Ullal police station, the incident took place between 1:30 am and 2 am. It was reported by a family member of a patient admitted in Yenepoya Hospital who was in his car at the time of the attack. The family member, identified as Ghalib Hussain sustained injuries in the incident and was admitted in the same hospital.
Sources said that the miscreants were masked. By the time the hospital security reached the spot, the miscreants had already fled after damaging the cars and breaking their windshields. Five of these cars had been parked by the family members of the patients admitted in the hospital. Two cars belonged to the PG and staff working in the department of anesthesia in the hospital.
The complaint states that as most of the patient parties were from distant places, they did not want to lodge a complaint and get into a police case. They wanted to reach their homes as soon as the patients were discharged from the hospital. They left after doing basic repair works to their vehicles. The hospital and the staff members of the institution whose cars were damaged have filed a complaint in the local police station. Complaint has also been filed by Ghalib Hussain who was injured.
Ullal police have registered a case and investigations are on.
The area where Yenepoya Hospital is located is said to be sensitive. Sources say that the miscreants might have specifically targeted the hospital given its popularity and the service it renders to poor patients and their families. The security unit of the hospital has said that the matter would be brought to the notice of local MLA and minister U T Khader, and added that despite police security in the area, such incidents are continuing. The security department further stressed the need for police outpost in the area, in view of the thousands of patients who visit the hospital on a daily basis.
