Mangaluru: Banana price soars beyond common man's reach

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (SP)

Mangaluru, Aug 14: For the first time, 'Yelakki' variety of bananas have crossed figure of a hundred rupees per kilogram. The price rise has happened on account of short supply of this fruit at a time when festival season has begun.

This variety of banana is preferred as an offering in temples alongside coconuts. On festivals they occupy a very important place. This banana, which was being traded at around Rs 40 per kg a couple of years back, had recently become costlier gradually, touching the price range of Rs 60 to 70 per kg. There has been further rise in its prices on account of increased demand and dwindling supply in the recent past. This fruit has now been priced at Rs 115 per kg.

Traders who know the price trend of vegetables expect price of Yelakki banana to rise further as supply position is not expected to improve soon. It is said that because of shortage of rainfall, banana crop has failed everywhere including Tamil Nadu, which happens to be the major supplier of banana. Supplies from places like Shivamogga, Kollegal, Kanakapura, Hospet etc which used to contribute significantly to the market, have also dried up on account of rainfall shortage.

India was once self sustained in food production when former PM Lal Bahadur Shastri gave call under 'Jai Jawan Jai Kisan' and himself fasted for this nation.
Recently centre informed the Supreme Court that despite a multi-pronged approach to improve income and social security of farmers, over 12,000 suicides were reported in the agricultural sector every year since 2013.
'Dal' only rich protein is now imported and sold at thrice the market price.
Tomates we are eating at the price of Apples.
Onions have made many state government tumble.
Now 'Bananas' part of the offering for the Gods in temples sold like yellow metal.
More than 123 crores worth of beef ready to exported to Pakistan. But in PM Modi's India citizens are killed in the name of God by open mob lynching.
Ghar Ghar Modi is already everywhere and essential commodity price are skyrocketing.
PM and BJP are saying Mera Desh Badal Raha Hai, Aage Badh Raha Hai'. But know one knew it from top to bottom or bottom to top.

Its very difficult to accept that this crop is coming from karnataka, which is under congress rule, isnt it?
cannot blame siddu due to party loyalty.
so, divert the issue by talking about other things..and as usual sikular favourite punching bag 'Modi'.

luckily majority of people have seen UPA rules when inflation was 8%...and now inflation is not above 4%..

    Flavian,

I dont think the milk prices is going to go down. This is because of environment that has been created by the govt with the beef ban. A proper dairy farm is at a disadvantage if it cannot dispose off its non -yielding cattle for money.

    Beowulf,
In Karnataka, as of today, non yielding cows can be slaughtered.
The owner can sell it to slaughterhouses with a certificate from a veterinarian.

You should find better excuses to propagate hate towards BJP and Modi.

My parents place where my brother is living, that is Kelmbet near Belman, there is 10 acre land of my sister, not cultivated from 15 years. adjacent to it there is a 33 acre land, not cultivated may be from 10 years. Water is there plenty in these lands. Like that there are many vacant land,s and since it is a village, people are not interested to remain there, unfortunately, I am one. With most of the people educated and go for white color job and with Rs 500-600 labor cost+ lunch, snacks and 90ml in the evening, it is uneconomical to cultivate for people like me.

Everybody needs white collar job & everybody want to live in cities. No takers for agriculture, even if someone interested, there is no enough water, also no rain. So all the prices bound to increase since demand is more, less supply. Afterall why the prices are going up? Because there is huge demand. But this money is swallowed by middlemen, doesn't go to the Farmer, this is how our system works.....
If the past governments had enough planning like linking rivers, creating water bodies, ground water management, rain water harvesting etc..., there should not have been any problems.
But everyone prefers borewells even if there is no water... All money power.....

Yes, there is no incentive to grow. You water, fertilise, take care of these plants and when the fruit grows in plenty you have to give away free or sell at absolute ridiculous prices. There is only that much that you can personally consume. So it's not worth the effort.
