Mangaluru, Aug 10: Mayor Kavitha Sanil on Thursday, August 10 urged the general public using water within Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) limits to pay the amount of pending water bills within 15 days.

Addressing media persons here, the mayor said, “Water bills of various domestic and commercial users falling under corporation limits are pending. A total of Rs 20,37,84,730 is pending from 50,000 consumers since the year 2000. The MCC has been prompt in issuing bills, but some consumers have not paid anything. Hence, defaulters are instructed to pay the pending amount within 15 days from today. If not, action will be taken against them.”

“When Mangaluru was facing acute shortage of water, we supplied water by working day and night. People need to pay this huge pending amount. After I took over as the mayor of the city, we disconnected the water supply of 2,000 consumers who failed to pay their bills. However, we resumed the water supply after the consumer paid the bills. There are 85,000 water connections which fall under MCC limits. I hereby request the consumers to pay the pending amount at the earliest,” she added.

Elaborating the pending amounts, she said, “There are 166 consumers with over Rs 1 lac amount pending, 350 consumers between Rs 50,000 to Rs 1 lac, and 2,780 consumers between Rs 10,000 to Rs 50,000,”

When the media queried about water bills not being issued in some areas, the mayor said, “We will adddress that issue. I assure you, within 10 days, water bills will be issued to those areas.”

When questioned about high court notice over raids, the mayor said said, “We were right in raiding the massage parlour. The MCC had issued the license to Green Valley Unisex Salon only to run the salon and not the massage parlour. The high court had asked us to appear before them on August 9, but the notice itself was dispatched on August 7. So I received the notice on August 9 late evening. Therefore, I could not appear before the court.”

Former mayor Shashidhar Hegde, corporators Rauf and Sabitha Misquith, and engineer Naresh were present.

Solutions are plenty. May I suggest three:
    1. Disconnect if bills are not paid within 30 days.
    2. Add portions of the bill to each new bill until the entire outstanding is paid within two years.
    3. Get the Government pass law to make outstanding bill a legal charge on property so that it remains on record and require the buyer or seller to pay before selling the property. This legal practice is permitted in many jurisdictions. Prior to registering the charge on the property records, send a registered notice to the defaulting water user.

Madam Kavita, You are coming up like modern days INDIRA GANDHI, in other words Iron Lady. These defaulters will complain about water supply. Are they blind they can't see their water bills are pending? Cut off their water supply and for reconnection fine them for 10 times of the pending bills.

If the bills are not issued in time, it's the rightful duty of the consumers to collect it from the concerned dept.
Suggestion: pls publish the names of the defaulters.

The whole system is infested with cancer from its root. You can not just take some part from somewhere and try to do patch work. The whole system from the root should be revamped and cleansed and put in order for you to get some required result and then maintained. But who will do is the million dollar question.
Now its not only the water supply issue how is our drainage, sewer and water treatment system????.
BTW, a mayor's post has all these duties in the job description.

Meter readers never come to take readings and their supervisors don't bother. Complaint to the corporator they are least bothered. Hello Mayor if you are listening please take urgent action in this matter before you issue warnings. Last time I received my bill was 6 to 8 months back. There are msny cases like this aroundvmdngslore city.I have informed my corporator, he admits always this is an issue but no action is taken. So set your house in order before pointing fingers on us. I am asking where is my bill madam. I want to pay.

It is every ones duty to pay after using the service. if bill is not given we should visit office and ask for the same .or if we have other water source and not required MCC water supply than not to take the connection in this case no one will ask to pay.

it is too much too give extension of time to pay water bills. This issue is being dragged for nearly 4 to 5 years. now the MCC has to issue final notice to pay the bill fixing a time limit. if not paid the water connection be disconnected. Rs.20 crores such a huge amount can be spent for other developmental activities.

Sirjii. she hold a position as Mayor of a C.C. She is not a Grama Panchyath president. Please give her good suggestion to how can take good decision and implement the same to the MCC. unless using these words. IF your party lady is same position u never use such words. Please allow her to do her work smoothly.
