New Delhi, Aug 8: Uttar Pradesh and Karnataka top the list in communal incidents reported in the country from January to May this year, highlights statistics submitted to Lok Sabha on Monday.
Forty four people have been killed and over 892 have suffered injuries in the 296 communal incidents reported till May across the county.
Compared to other states, UP has been accounted for 60 incidents which have claimed lives of 16 and injured 151.
Karnataka ranks second, with 36 incidents which has claimed lives of three people and injured 93.
Others states which have high number of communal incidents reported are Madhya Pradesh (29), Rajasthan (27), West Bengal (26), Bihar (23), Gujarat and Maharashtra (20 each).
In 2016, 703 communal incidents were reported and 751 in 2015. UP and Karnataka topped the list both the years. In 2016, UP had 162 and Karnataka had 101 incidents. In 2015, UP and Karnataka had 155 and 105 incidents respectively.
Statistics reveal that highest number of deaths was 97 reported in 2015, followed by 95 in 2014 and 86 in 2015. Last year the total number of people injured is 2,321 which is higher in comparison to the previous years.
