Bantwal, Aug 3: The taluk has finally been free of the clutches of prohibitory orders under section 144 of Criminal Procedure Code and 35 of Karnataka Police Act after a gap of over two months. The taluk has returned to normalcy and police contingents which were deputed here from other districts to look after law and order situation have returned to their home towns.
With the lifting of the prohibitory orders, district superintendent of police, Sudheer Kumar Reddy, attended rural beat meetings and gave certain suggestions and advice. A beat police meeting held at Vittal was led by assistant superintendent of police from here, Dr Arun.

After personal fight between two persons at Kalladka on May 26 worsened and gave rise to murder attempt on the same night at Melkar here, prohibitory orders under section 144 had been clamped. It was extended a number of times thereafter as two murders and several incidents of clashes happened thereafter. Additional director general of police, Alok Mohan, had to make two visits to the district and over a thousand policemen were posted here for two months from nearby districts. As of now, prohibitory orders continue within Mangaluru city commissionerate limits till August 7. The taluk is free from prohibitory orders since July 28.
During the above period, murder attempt on Pavan had happened at Melkar, while auto driver, Ashraf,was killed later at Benjanapadavu. RSS activist, Sharath Madiwala, was murdered thereafter at B C Road. Although murder accused in Ashraf case have been arrested, the other accused have succeeded in evading arrest so far. Both these murders had happened in the same style and police guess that both of them were the handiwork of the same gang, which has not left behind any clue.
