Udupi, Aug 2: Students led by the local unit of Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) held a protest at clock tower here on Wednesday August 2, demanding impartial probe into the death of student from Moodbidri, Kavya, in her hostel room.
Addressing the students, ABVP activist from PPC College, Rakshit Bhandari, observed that the head of the college has been claiming that Kavya ended her life out of frustration at getting mere seven marks out of possible 20 in Hindi subject. "A sports person always is backed by strong determination and happens tobe mentally tough. Therefore it is difficult to believe that she was depressed at the low marks," he argued.
He also drew the attention of the concerned to the information that the roommates of the victim had knocked at the door when they came back. He wondered as to why CCTV footage of the student's body being carried out, and knocking on the door are not being made available. He also questioned about not returning the track suit worn by the student at the time of her death to her parents, terming this as an example of irresponsibility on the part of the college management. He demanded for impartial investigation into the incident. Bhandari also called upon the young people and ladies to come together to carry on fight to get justice in the case.
"If Kavya had excelled at badminton and won medals, the college would have become famous. Therefore, there is no reason for hiding any details. Organizations of students, Stree Shakti organizations and others, which cry foul at petty issues but are silent on this matter, should organize agitations till justice is done in the case," he stated. He said high level investigation by responsible officers should be ordered. He also called upon Alvas to come out with detailed clarification on all the issues. If they fail to meet this demand, ABVP will organize protests on larger scale, he warned.
Another ABVP activist, Keertan, said that ABVP helps children to grow up into worthy citizens. He said that his organization is not limited to fighting for student rights alone but also other issues involving interest of the society.
Students of TMA Pai Polytechnic, MPMC and PPC colleges participated in the protest. Subodh Reddy, ABVP city unit secretary and Manjunath were present. Subodh expressed the suspicion that this could be a case of murder as the body of the girl was assigned to mortuary within half an hour of the girl's death before her parents reached the college premises. He said this incident has given rise to apprehension and doubts in the minds of parents, citizens and students. He said parents of the girl should be provided with justice through transparent and thorough probe.
