Mangaluru: Heart-wrenching - Newborn found dead in well at Puttige

Mangaluru, Aug 1: In a heart-wrenching incident, a newborn was found dead in a well at Nelligudde in Puttige, Moodbidri near here on Tuesday August 1.

It is not yet ascertained whether the baby was thrown into the well, and if so, by who.

However, it is suspected that the newborn belongs to an unmarried lady.

On Sunday July 27, an unmarried heavily pregnant lady had attempted suicide by jumping into the same well. She was rescued and admitted to a hospital in Mangaluru.

It is suspected that the lady might have given birth to the baby after jumping into the well.

    Our society is one of the reasons for this tragedy. When a unmarried women gets pregnant, our society does not accept and women left with no option either to suicide or abortion or like this abandoning the new born.

    Why our society is still not encouraging or giving space for the Single mom's??

    @Srikanth K,Karkala,unfortunately it hits always woman.The man escapes easily.But when a unmarried woman gets a baby /becomes pregnent ,is not a reason to abort or to get aborted.It is a crime .Instead they can give the baby for adaption.So many childless couple wait for one child.So can the child and couple can be happy.or give to ashrams.why women are not ready to have the baby ?it is because of soceity,and the man who slip away after he enjoys.Baby has no fault.so why throw away it like dumping waste?Just take a DNA of the baby and try to findout potential parent.

    I do agree with you Rita Germany, Yes Most of the time both Man and women are careless when they are enjoying inside closed room and repent later. And most of the time Man escapes when he gets to know that his partner is pregnant. What a women can do alone when she is living in such a society where there is no respect to her and no one accepts the pregnant women without wedlock in the society.

    Say mistake has happened but what is the fault of the infant which is growing inside the womb? abortion is nothing but Murder! I think we should think in broader angle and should accept and respect Single Mom's in India.

    Nothing wrong with having sex before marriage. In fact it should be accepted in a society instead of being prudish about it. This will widely help men from performance anxiety or any other sexual problems that may arise. Better to know the problems before hand rather than suffer after marriage. Just need to have necessary precautions. unwanted pregnancies can happen even in a marriage.

    The lady should be investigated and the man behind this also to be arrested. ITS POSSIBLE THAT THE LADY MAY BE A VICTIM OF false marriage promises. She should have exposed the man behind this instead of killing innocent child.

    Absolutely ! How come the people did not notice that the lady was pregnant when she jumped in the well but never realized that some of her weight is shed when they rescued her ? Didn't the medical team where she was admitted realize that she is in a post-natal stage ?

    Why wasn't the case reported and concerned people come looking for the fetus in the well before it was reported to be floating int he same well ? Did she not look for her partner during her pregnancy or at-least tell somebody about it ? Why people did not try to help her during those days ? Too many questions but no answers.

    False or true marriage promise, its couple`s responsibility for taking necessary steps from unwanted pregnancies.

    Stop using stupid terms like ''false marriage promise'' with the intention of ''protecting'' women and blaming men. The situation when man promised to woman that he will marry her may change at any time. Forget relationships before marriage even relationships after marriage are not guaranteed to last forever.

    It takes nine months to deliver a baby after conception and she can't live in isolation all those days, to be leaving the baby at an ashram upon delivery as you suggested. Well, spotting an unmarried woman with a bump at her front is certainly questionable and yes, as you said, its time our society changes. We must either not cause them pregnancy outside marriage and if we did, should not accuse her alone for the situation.

    As many of you readers said here, true, its cruel to kill a baby. Now, tell me how is it kinder to get a 10 year-old pregnant (obviously raped) and the courts at all levels, upon pleading, do not allow her to terminate the baby ? Where is kindness in this case ?

    I have no words to explain in neither case. Because, if a woman, no matter what her age is, is responsible to contain the baby till its birth, the person who is causing such situation to her too is equally responsible till the baby is born and thereafter too. One cannot wash off his hands once his job done but the society point fingers at her for the rest of her life.
