Mangaluru, Jul 28: Kavya (16), an SSLC student who was a state level badminton player, committed suicide at her hostel room in Moodbidri near here on the evening of July 20. Her parents have expressed suspicion of foul play. She had used a sari to hang herself.
Kavya was the daughter of Lokesh from Yekkaru Devagudde near Kateel. In the case filed in Moodbidri police station, it is mentioned that the student had resorted to this extreme step as she was depressed by the low marks she had scored in the recent examination. Police personnel of the station have been investigating the case.
Kavya was distraught at the fact that she had not got expected marks in Hindi subject of FA1 examination. Reportedly she was depressed by this unexpected result.
However, parents of the girl have made some serious allegations about the behaviour of the officials of the institution. Kavya's father Lokesh, who has termed this incident as a 'systematically executed murder', said that he has decided to fight out the case legally to ensure that no children would face this fate in future. "I suspect the hand of physical training director of the college in my daughter's death. Kavya, who called us on July 19 night, had said that she would be leaving for the ground at 4.30 am the next day for training. The voice recorder in my phone has proof of that. Still, physical training director, Praveen, has been claiming that he has never said that, to escape from blame," he stated. Lokesh said that he had given written complaint to the city police commissioner seeking detailed investigation into his daughter's death.
"We were told by the college management that Kavya ended her life at 7.30 pm on July 20 and we were informed at 8 pm. Although we reached there in 45 minutes, the body was already in the mortuary of local hospital. We fail to understand the tearing hurry for shifting the body to the mortuary," he stated. Lokesh says he and his wife were not allowed to properly look at the body of their daughter at the mortuary and that the body was handed over to them on Friday afternoon.
Lokesh asserts that his daughter, a sportsperson, was courageous and tough in her approach and therefore she could never have ended her life on her own. He feels that this is a case of systematic murder and pledged to fight the case to its logical end.
Dakshina Kannada district committee of Democratic Youth Federation of India has urged the government to conduct proper and impartial investigation into this student's death as the circumstances under which it occurred have given rise to certain doubts. It noted that the parents of the girl believe it to be a case of murder.
In a release, district secretary of DYFI, Santosh Bajal, urged the government to see that the parents of the girl get justice. Students Federation of India represented by its Dakshina Kannada district committee president, Nitin Kuthar, also has made similar demand in view of the doubt expressed by the parents of the girl about this incident being a case of murder.
A social media campaign demanding justice for Kavya has also gone viral in Facebook and other platforms.
