Mangaluru: Popular priest Fr Lawrence Gomes passes away at 79

Mangaluru, Jul 23: Fr Lawrence Gomes, a popular diocesan priest, passed away on Sunday, July 23.

He was 79.

Fr Lawrence was born on 22 August 1937. He was ordained as a priest on 3 December 1962. As a priest he served at Bendur, Kadaba, Belman, Shirva, Sasthan and Karkal parishes.

Known for his humble nature and missionary zeal, he was popular among people.

Funeral will be held on Monday, 24 July at 3.30 pm at Valencia Church.

As it is well known, Rev. Fr. Lawrence Gomes has been admired by many Parishioners and his new friends he had in various places throughout his Priesthood. An intelligent, humble, virtuous, soft spoken soul; a traditional Catholic Priest from Pre-Latin to Post Latin era for the Catholic Diocese of Mangalore.

I had the privilege to know him quite closely during his trips to Long Island, New York on his pastoral assignments and during my visits to his Parishes; Sastan, Shirva and St. Lawrence Attur-Karkal. We thank Rev. Gomes for his participation in con-celebration of my mother's funeral mass and my wedding mass at Holy Family Roman Catholic Church, Brahmavar.

Rev. Fr. Lawrence Gomes will be missed; will be fondly remembered by many...

RIP dear father,as our assistant parish priest in our Agrar church you had taught us lot of things especially during our first communion time as well as when you trained us as alter servers.Your noble and selfless service will be remembered.You suffered for almost a decade due to Parkinson's disease.But never showed any suffering on your face.A big thank you from all of us.
