Mangaluru: Finally, positive signs of service bus stand shifting to Pumpwell

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (SP)

Mangaluru, Jul 23: In about two weeks from now, in all probability, a concrete decision will be taken to shift the main bus stand of the city to Pumpwell where the city corporation has acquired land for the same. If this happens, the current bus stand, which is wilting in a cramped space without any facilities, will get shifted to a state of the art bus stand befitting its smart city tag.

The service bus stand which was at Hampankatta earlier, and which was proposed to be shifted to Kottara, was finally shifted to make shift venue at the hockey ground of Nehru Maidan under pressure from bus operators on October 6, 1996. The current venue of bus stand suffers from lack of space and facilities, with only emergency works being undertaken to ward off critical situations. Earlier proposals to shift the bus stand to outskirts of the city had encountered stiff resistance from bus operators who were fearing about loss of revenue.

The city roads need to be relieved of movement of heavy vehicles as number of vehicles has jumped nearly four fold from 1.2 lac in 1993-94 to four lac at present. About a hundred new vehicles get registered here daily and about 4,000 buses move about the city roads which include city buses, express buses, tourist buses, service buses and buses of a large number of educational institutions. The swelling number of vehicles has also given rise to parking problems in addition to traffic woes.

Although land by the side of national highway at Pumpwell was acquired long back, development works were not undertaken at a fast pace there. Currently, land filling work is in progress. Although it was planned to begin shifting of the bus stand on an experimental basis early this year by laying interlocks there, this plan did not materialize. A report on utilization of 7.3 acres of land currently available at Pumpwell and blue print of the proposed bus stand are ready. There are plans to execute it on private-public partnership basis and some private firms have reportedly shown interest. As the city mayor and deputy commissioner of the district have evinced interest now in shifting the bus stand, the proposal of having a well-equipped bus stand for the city might get much-needed momentum in a few days time from now.

One of the problems encountered for the new bus stand is objection from national highways department. National highway 66 passing by the side of the plot now chosen for bus stand is being widened from Nanthoor to Talapady and fly over is being built at Pumpwell. National highways department feels that traffic snarls will aggravate if the bus stand is built there at this stage.

Currently, discussions are on about the practicability of creating temporary facilities at Pumpwell and shifting of the bus stand there till a proper bus stand comes up there. MLA J R Lobo said that shifting of bus stand happens to be the need of the hour to handle dense traffic in the heart of the city and that there is likelihood of a decision being taken within the next two weeks once the discussions currently going on between different authorities get a proper and final shape.

This construction of pumpwell bus stand proposal has completed a decade but reinvented by politicians just before every ellection.
Vested interests Bus operators and Politicians will prolong it for another decade. An underpass opposit Karnataka bank head office and peripheral roads will make it easy for the approaching vehicles .Three highways join here thus reducing intercity bottle necks. But this will be a dream for ever like the multystory vehicle parking proposal near old busstand. Same with the the ring road that really will make mangalore a dream city along the Nethravathy river banks from padil nethravathy bridge thaneer bavi kuloor kulshekar padil.

I hope the flyover at Pumpwell was planned keeping this future bus stand in mind. It looks like the entry/exit of the bus stand just falls near the ramp up of the Pumpwell flyover, if this is not properly planned it will become very much congested. These buses have tendency to block roads to onboard, off-board people, so this junction will get further blocked. Hence this might be a problem which needs to be addressed now.

Please introduce more and more Govt. buses in and around city limits. Private bus operators are a curse to the society. No manners, rash driving, stopping wherever they want, racing, killing innocent people. Stop the private bus Mafia in Mangalore once in for all.

    Jai Hind.

Dear Authorities, Glad to hear that you people have finally woken up to see the traffic situation getting worse everyday. Great idea to shift the bus stand to pumpwell area but have you traveled recently this route on an everyday basis. The construction works going on in that area is a huge cause for daily traffic jams. Earlier it was only during peak hours but now its an hourly sight. It would be a bad idea to shift the bus stand before completing the pending construction works. Kindly have mercy on daily commuters of this route and first complete these works before shifting the bus stand.

For long term it is a good idea but not immediately because of following reasons.
    1. Our authorities not resolved or not given any time line to solve the traffic mess at Nantoor . Even a traffic intersection with signal and free left turns should solve it temporarily.
    2. The highway between Pump well to KPT definitely require two additional lanes to evacuate additional trafiic.
    3. Authorities shall also plan underpass between Pumpwell and Nanthoor to reach the bus stand from Shivbagh so as to reduce traffic density on the above said junctions.
    4. Plan proper bus bays and implement it in high density traffic area to avoid buses parking on the middle of the road and create nuisance to public.
    5. Any state of the art bus stand with proper public amenities will require minimum 1.5 to 2 years , otherwise it will be a JOPDA in muddy field.

If our authorities consider above plan well now, we can realize a good bus stand in 1.5 to 2 years time. Otherwise either it will be misery awaited or just talk .

I’d suggest this new bus stand at Pumpwell be allotted to express, tourist and long distance interstate buses only. Local service buses should be permitted up to State Bank Bus Stand as usual. Many people traveling to the city from remote villages in the district have work or business around Hampankatta and Bunder areas. A large number of them including students have to travel daily. It will be inconvenient for such people, especially during rush hours, to wait or go for another bus after alighting at Pumpwell.

Mr.John, your concern is valid one, but i feel the plan is all the buses will come to state Bank and last stop & starting point will be Pumpwell. So not to worry.

This service bus stand should have been shifted to Pumpwell long long back to come out of the traffic congestion and traffic jam in Hampankatta and other places. Really we are fed up with the unnecessary delay of this Project. Another project to be completed is Multi-storeyed cum parjking complex. This is also dragged unnecessarily. Anyway better late than never. Start and complete these projects as early as possible.

Why do we need the Private Service and Express Bus ? Cannot State Government have their own service and Express bus . If we have service and express bus stand in Pumpwell or Kottara then the pressure on the traffic at Hampankatta and State Bank area will reduce. It will be a delight and safe to travel and get to Hampankatta and State Bank area.

I am sure the experties have studied the intensity this shifting will put on Pumpwell and Nantoor junctions. Agree that Pumpwell junction is under process with a flyover but Nantoor junction is in a mess as it is.

Please drive some sense in the minds of those who are making decision about such moves.

While planning for a new bus stand thought should be given to provide sufficient space for KSRTC buses which ply to most cities in Karnataka, provision should also be made for ping of all passengers arriving from Bangalore, Mysore in night buses. There should also be provision for city services to pick up and passenger who wish to travel out of Mangalore in other words to facilitate last mile connectivity

Why do we have this private bus stand and govt. bus stand concept? There should be one bus stand. We are taking about smart city, world class facilities etc. I think it is all immature when we can not provide basic services to our citizens. We moan and gloat about our politicians but we put them back in power. They work for interest groups like bus lobby and a simple thing like bus stand takes years to materialize. Sad..
If we want to be a smart city, then these things should be put on referendum and citizens should vote on them.
