Mangaluru: Mayor instructs to clear footpaths encroached for parking purpose

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (SP)

Mangaluru, Jul 22: City mayor Kavita Sanil instructed officials to detect encroachment of public utility spaces adjacent to the roads in front of commercial establishments by these entities to convert them into private parking spaces. She told them to immediately get these encroachments removed and impose heavy penalties for repeated violators.

She was speaking after presiding over a special meeting held at the city corporation auditorium on Friday July 21 to discuss ways and means to improve traffic movement in the city.

"Traffic police should remove 'no parking' sign boards put up in front of commercial buildings. The officials should decide and inform how much of the space in front of the building belongs to the shop owners," she said.

MLC Ivan D'Souza pointed out that vehicular traffic turns dense all of a sudden because of of the fact that closure time of the schools in the city is the same. He said that a meeting of school heads under the presidentship by district deputy commissioner would be convened soon to affect change in the closure timings.

City corporator Roopa Bangera said that a permanent solution needs to be found for traffic woes at PVS Circle, road opposite Manasa Towers near PVS, etc. She said that because of the difference o height of the concrete road near Sharbath Katte on Airport Road, two-wheeler riders often meet with accident there. She also pointed out that the Skywalk project at Hampankatte for which foundation stone was laid over a year back, has not taken off.

Roopa also said that auto rickshaw drivers who ride their vehicles very slowly when not having passengers, and driving at high speed when passengers are seated inside, are causing traffic snarls. She advised traffic police to pay attention to this problem.

Inspector of the city (north) police station Manjunath said that at present trucks loaded with fish which spill dirty water on the roads are being fined heavily. He said that because of the existence of long national highway stretch within north police station limit, the highways department is expected to act but it is not responsive enough to the problems. "We have created zebra crossings with public support, and constables are posted near the schools in the morning and evening for helping children cross the roads. A WhatsApp group has been created, and information conveyed to this group about traffic problems would be addressed immediately," he stated.

Western station inspector Mohan Kottary said that vehicular parking on car street has been streamlined by alternating between even and odd date parkings. He said that because of the fact that four to five thousand children take the road at a time in the evening between PVS and Ballalbagh, controlling their movement is creating problems. He also sought space for dumping unused vehicles in the city.

Deputy mayor Rajanessh, chief whip Shashidhar Hegde and city corporation commissioner Muhammed Nazeer were present.

Why should poor people clear footpaths that has been encroached for selling their daily products. The govt could not provide them selling facilities inspite of enough taxes they collect and we are asking the poor people to vacate the place so that rich people can park their cars. Why do rich people need a car in mangalore when everything is within 1 Km. From Birth to Grave in Mangalore everything is within One Kilometres. To explain to be born hospital, to go to school, to go to temple/church/mosque, to go to office, to go to market etc all is within 1 km. Road infrastructure is so bad and we still want car to move around. Use the Bus or use a rickshaw it will provide employment and income to the poor. Mangalore does not require small or big cars, we can walk to buy our products and drop our children to school.

Nonsense! Two separate matters! If we constantly ask where are they supposed to go, we will never clear slums, encroachment, etc.
The law is the law. Follow the law and do not encroach! This gives rise to civic disorder and corruption on the part of the local police.
The second issue is a social one. Do not mix following the law with social issues. Yes, they have to be given places where they can sell their products. But is it fair to the shop keeper who pays premium price for his retail space to have his customer parking area encroached?
Two wrongs don't make a right.

Foot path vendors are poor that is why you want to take action against them .why you are not taking action against who have enthroned parking slot in commercial buildings? Because of parking problem in commercial complex, the vehicles are parking out side buildings. If foot path vendors are in cities then only beauty.but in proper way. I have seen in Delhi, Mumbai , Bangalore and many cities foot path vendors.

I fully agree with you sir. But in Mangalore you can see vehicles are parked on foot path only. If you give more space in footpath, then more vehicles will park.

These are all long pending issues. Our footpaths are encroached by fruit and vegetable vendors and we pedestrians are walking on roads which results in accidents as traffic flow is very much increased.Footpaths are encroached for car and two wheeler parking and also for food stalls. I just watch this is happening for the last 10 to 15 years. but no stern action has been taken by MCC authorities. Our tiger has come many a times and now gone to Forest. Though the street vendors are vacated in the afternoon itself they return to their original place as if it is their ancestral property. When our City is marching towards Smart City all such footpath activities be stopped to look the City more beautiful and not dirty.

Yes, the Mayor is doing a good work and helping the citizens of Mangalore to live in a better environment. There are so many establishments who encroach the footpath and run their business. In Kodialbail some of the tenants of the Church building are comfortably using the footpath to stock their merchandise, to repair vehicles and parking of two wheelers and four wheelers. This habit of the shops using the footpath should be stopped by the corporation and the police. Make it easy for the pedestrians comprising mostly senior citizens and students. The pedestrians are forced to use the road to walk.

Now nobody is talking about multi level parking with Auto rickshaw/ two wheeler parking. It is the main solution for parking and traffic jam. This could be a good parking revenue for the corporation. Gulf countries traffic department is flourishing with the solar machine and online parking system. They give better parking facilities and better roads for the people.
Some of the bottle necks were created by corporation giving permission to construct buildings on the road without much space for foot path and bus stop eg Canara college, beasent complex and bunts hostel.
What about smart city plan? Have you left it for next government.

    Dear Henry,
The points which you have mentioned is common in any of the developing nations and the so called developed ones. But the taxes should be complemented with extensive infrastructure and facilities for the common man , which is not happening to the full in India. The same can not be said after five or ten years, I am sure.
    Mangalore's current requirements.
Footpaths should be cleared. Encroaching parties should be fined or subjected to trial for obstructing public path.
Parking lots to be marked clearly. Take a fee for parking.
Drainage clogs should be cleared off, at least once in a year before monsoon.
Private buses should be tamed. They should stop only in designated stops. They should stick to the speed limit within the city.
Hygiene in the restaurants should be monitored.

Please add those which I have missed out.

I can imagine your frustration about taxes. This is because your are not habitual to paying taxes. Without taxes the government can not run, infrastructure can not improve, our defense and security departments can not work, and ................ finally a country can not head to prosperity.

Please go outside of India (not GCC countries) and you will experience these taxation systems everywhere. In some cases less and in others more!!!

Finding a place for parking is very important, nobody goes to a place solely because it has parking. But systematic and well-organised parking system for an upcoming Smart city Like Mangaluru is a must! well done City Mayor for this timely initiative.

A person who keeps himself presentable always with his sense of dressing and appearance tends to be neat and perfect in his job and approach in life. Madam Mayor has been never seen shabby at all, always nicely dressed. Her approach as a Mayor is also focused, she has been very clear in cleansing up the city. I appreciate all her intentions, though sometimes, i refute her actions.
