Mangaluru: Tomato prices hovering around Rs 100 as inflow nosedives

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (SP)

Mangaluru, Jul 20: There have been times when farmers came out into the streets and expressed their anger at the low rates quoted for the tomatoes grown by them by wholesalers. Fuming at the fact that sometimes even the rental of the vehicles carrying tomatoes from their villages to cities were not covered by these prices, they had emptied their tomatoes on the roads.

The times have changed now. Because of steep reduction in rainfall, tomato crop has been adversely affected, cities are not getting enough inflow of stocks, and hence tomatoes command price of over Rs 90 a kg, which was unheard of in the past. Vegetable vendors have been selling tomatoes anywhere between Rs 90 and 100 a kilogram. This vegetable experienced a big leap on Wednesday due to fallen supplies. The supply has come down to about 10 to 15 percent of what it was earlier, it is gathered. With improvement in rainfall, the position is likely to improve in coming weeks.

Tomatoes were priced at about Rs 15 per kg till two weeks ago before jumping to Rs 65 recently. As tomato supply dwindled further, prices shot up again on Wednesday. Bengaluru rural, Kolar, Chikkaballapur and Mandya districts are the major suppliers of tomato.

Tomato is in high demand from hotels, householders, exporters, juice factories alike and demand keeps pushing its further up. Other vegetables have remained steady with onion being sold at Rs 12 a kg, and potato between Rs 12 and 15. Prices of several vegetables have remained stable except French beans, it is gathered.

The drought situation in the country is a humanitarian crisis affecting over 33 crore Indians in over 13 states – almost one-quarter of our population. We must move beyond the rhetoric and politics of drought to governance of solutions. It is in that context that I make the following two points:
We must address the current crisis proactively and completely.
We must develop a long-term strategy and medium-term strategy to this issue of water to ensure that at some point, we do not remain mute spectators to this suffering year after year.
During Delhi elections Onion became precious commodity thank to BJP which made it political issue.Congress ruled CM Siddaramaiah government is heading for election in less than an year 'tomato' now replaced 'Onions'.
When BJP ruled state farmers are taking bullets during protest, the Karnataka in other hand set an example to rest of India using digital transaction like 'E-Mandi' and 'Raichur agri scientists use Nanotech to make eco-friendly insecticide more effective.
A comprehensive strategy for improved management of drought in India should be our priority.
While train loads of water could bring immediate relief – better investment in rural infrastructure, a Central Water Management policy, focus on climate change and extensive use of technology, is urgently required.
With satellite image and other technology tools, we can predict droughts and plan for this in advance. Innovative water conservation methods such as those adopted in Israel – like desalination of seawater for coastal areas – should also be studied and implemented to meet such crisis in the future.
Union Agriculture Minister Radha Mohan Singh on Wednesday said as many as 11,400 farmers committed suicide in 2016.The Centre should look upon the current crisis as a national calamity. Loan waiver can't be permanent solution for the need of the country.

Those who are commenting that increase in price of tomatoes benefit to farmers, are they sure that farmers had got more price for their tomatoes this time ????. Those who are little knowledge, can understand that at the time of increase in price of tomatoes, onions etc, farmers nothing get extra, only middlemen will get the highest benefit!!!!!!!!!

Don't question Central Govt for price hike... otherwise minister Nirmala Sitaraman will say "If you can not afford Tomato, Onions etc.. cook without using such ingredients"
During GST implementation debate, she said "If you can not afford to have restaurant food, cook at home and have"!

Cost of coconut ,oil, your dal, urid dal many pulses, milk etc, are also underpriced compared to actual pricing of many services like bus transport, auto service, lorry service, hotel prices, medical services, pathology medical reports, doctors fees etc., Nobody is thinks of farmers in this country. His childrens too need good education, wear good clothing, require good house, need car etc.,When we are tolerating all other services, things why can t we tolerate high (which is not so) price of agricultural produces.Farmers have no PF , gratuity ,insurance, leave, medical leave, maternity leave etc., like others. Why they should be deprived..?Why not achhe din for them too..?

    jeevan,
    You are right.
Time being let the people use Tomatoes sparignly until situation improves.
In the mean time govrnment can import from outside and ensure that prices are maintained to reasonable level so that traders/stockists do not exploit and take advantage over the short supply.

From where will you bring rotten tomatoes when the price is Rs.100? All rotten tomatoes will be used by restaurants who always mix with good ones when they are cheaper.
