Udupi, Jul 18: Shirva police have arrested two persons in the case of cheating a bank by pledging fake gold jewellery worth Rs 65 lacs.

Umesh Amin (43), the manager of Innanje C A Bank Kunjargiri branch and Umesh Acharya (49), the jewel appraiser of the bank are the persons arrested. Both have been remanded to judicial custody.

Shankaracharya, from Padubelle, had committed suicide recently with his wife and two daughters. Later it was discovered that Shankaracharya had availed several gold loans from Innanje C A branch and the gold pledged there to avail the loan was fake. It is suspected that Shankaracharya availed the loan with the help from the arrested persons.

Manohar Rao, the chief executive officer of the bank had complained with the police after finding out that the gold pledged was fake.

Police have also seized 3.370 kilograms of fake gold worth Rs 62.5 lacs and 28 grams of real gold worth Rs 55,000 from the bank relating to the case.

Under the guidance of Kaup circle inspector Moorthy Rao , Shirva station officer Narasimha Shetty is investigating the case. Police personnel Dayanand, Damodar Acharya and Narayana are helping in the case.

It has been also revealed now that Shankaracharya also availed loans from other banks including a credit cooperative society in Udupi. But some say he did not cheat these banks. Police are still trying to establish where else he availed loans and if he had pledged fake gold there also. So far no other bank has complained.

Meanwhile the customers who had bought gold jewellery from Shankaracharya have been going to other jewelers to check if he had sold them any fake golf jewellery. But no one has come forward with the claim that they bought fake jewellery from Shankaracharya.
