Udupi: Suicide pact- Fear of exposure forced jeweller to poison family?

Daijiworld Media Network - Udupi (SP)

Udupi, Jul 17: It has come as a shock for Padubelle and surrounding places after it came to light that Shankaracharya, who was considered by even people close to him in addition to the general public as a honest man, had actually cheated Kurkalu branch of Innanje Cooperative Agricultural Bank by pledging spurious gold worth Rs 65 lac. Nobody thought that Acharya, who was a gentleman to the core and had earned respect and trust of the people as well as bank staff, could have indulged in a scandal of this magnitude. After the issue came into the open many are expressing the doubt about similar frauds which would have been committed in other banks including nationalized ones.

It is almost certain that Shankaracharya was overwhelmed at the thought of his fall from the position of respect in the society and uncovering of the facade of being truthful and honest once the fraud he had indulged in came to light. Many analyze that Acharya would not have expected the things to become so critical. Several of his sympathizers feel that he would have faced funds crunch on account of drying of inflow into his business on account of certain government policies and emergence of big jewellery houses in ornaments making business.

Other than a house which Acharya had built for himself about two decades agao, he does not have much property. Therefore, speculation about where the money so raised has gone, and whether outsiders had got involved and cheated Shankaracharya, are rife and these things need to be probed.

After the fact that Shankaracharya, his wife and two daughters died out of poison consumption came to be known, manager of the bank, Umesh Ameen from Innanje, called general manager of the bank, Manohar Rao, to inform that Shankaracharya had raised huge loans from the bank. Growing suspicious, Rao got the ornaments pledged by Acharya appraised by jewellers other than the one appointed by the bank. During the process, it was found that out of about three kg of gold pledged by Shankaracharya, only 150 grams was genuine gold. There are allegations that jewel appraiser of the bank, Umesh Acharya, who had certified all these ornaments to be genuine, and bank manager, Umesh Ameen, had knowingly violated norms. It is being argued that the bank staff had faith in Acharya who had impeccable record as a customer of the bank.

President of Innanje Cooperative Agricultural Bank, Rajesh Rao Pangala, said that Shankaracharya was a valued and trusted customer of the bank and the manager who had faith in him, would have granted these loans. He however said that the bank manager and jewel appraiser had committed mistakes in not properly following the procedures. He said that the bank manager had also transgressed his powers as the per customer limit for gold loans has been pegged at Rs 5 lac by the bank.

The police have taken into possession fake ornaments pledged to the bank apart from certain documents. Umesh Acharya from Kurkalu Pajai Moodumane, who had evaluated the pledged ornaments, and Umesh Ameen (43) from Innanje , who had granted loans, have been arrested and produced in the court.

We can't judge him. It could not happen without involvement of bank managers or big shots. They might even have dumped him off...anything is possible. He might have planned to whistleblow...so they might have blown him and his family.
Also, he could have gone for family since those bank and police will end up irritating his wife and daughters if only he committed suicide.
So best option is to be happy n content with what we have and also pray..if we are short of anything.
It is a curse if we are short of basic things. like it is said....stretch as far as your bed goes.

I even doubt if the bankers have replaced the original gold with fake gold after shankar's death. For 65 lakhs people will be ready to sit in jail for few months.

Jossey, while I agree with you, with more than 4 lakh crores NPA, which is more than the market capitalization of PSUs, you can imagine how many Vijaya Mallyas are there in India. Hundreds of companies, forget about returning bank money, never return fixed deposit money and interest even after maturity to senior citizens, sick and people in death bed. They are enjoying 5 star life style. Govt is not touching them since they subscribed for the election fund.

    The following is my advice.
    1. Do not compete with others.
    2. Lead an honest & humble life.
    3. Do not spend too much on weddings. It has become a fashion now to hire the most expensive caterer & event management company etc., Do not give much importance to gold .
    4. Work hard & live according to your means. Balance work and life. Give importance to kids & their well being & education. Teach them good behavior. Do not go after investing in property after property. See what is your necessity & work & invest accordingly. Invest more on kids & their education.
    5. You might find "Buy & Drink for more" shops attractive & you might think that it is your status, but do not go after this culture.

I do agree with you Rob Stan. We should always keep control over our expectations. Now a days to keep status in the society people depend on heavy bank loans especially for building houses and to perform their children weddings. I saw one businessman borrowed Rs.10 lakhs loan from bank for his son's wedding 7-8 years ago, as I heard till date he is not able to repay it. There is a proverb 'stretch your legs according to the bed’.

Yes Thomas. It's not right to spend too much on wedding as it's a one day event. Event management people make merry using people's hard earned money. Instead people should spend that amount for something good and day to day living. Now a days there are marriage agents who have direct connections with wedding planners. Also I feel that corruption & under the table dealings might increase one's wealth, but they do not bring happiness. Real happiness is when one works hard, it might be physical work or not. But if it's not hard physical work, then recreation is a must.

We are thought to "go for" money, marriage, children, house, car, etc..etc.. It might become too much for a person at some point. He had skills to make a good living for himself. It looks like he had taken on to much. It is a lesson for others. What one thinks are assets and acquire might become burden and the result is this....

How the bank can blame the dead man now?
    1. Once gold is given to bank custody after due certification by appraiser what control does the borrower has on the gold.
    2. They should have caught it when receiving itself, if it is spurious.
    3. The man is dead and cannot defend himself.
    4. Also they are attributing this reason for suicide.

This incident makes me to rethink about the roles prescribed by the culture, tradition, society. What if he not married, had children, educated them, owned house, cars etc. etc....What if he lived for himself..he might have lived a good life. He had skills....it's time for a person to have foresight and insight and understand what are the real assets and liabilities....what works for and against.......It looks like he had taken on too much....there not a single person appreciating what he might have been going through......

Still waters run deep. Earlier, before the demat share facility, with the tacit knowledge of bank managers, giving some cut, the businessmen were pledging duplicate printed shares as security for loans. In Mumbai, it was rampant.

Since it is better to die in dignity than live in humility, some people commit suicide. There is absolutely no reason to commit suicide, if the gold pledged is genuine.

@J.F.de souza,Attavar, the reason for his suecide,I am sure the nearing his daughters wedding. From where he will give the gold when it is fake ,wont be accepted, and a shame too.The time was nearing,no escape .suppose family is left back, they will be humiliated.I find ,instead of suecide he could have admitted the truth, and so live with grace than now killing his family and himself.we say about others, but when same situation came to us ,dont know whether we too are so strong?RIP.Other side whether he told the truth to his family about it ,and decided to commit suecide together?instead of living in malice.unfortunately he took the truth with him.
