Mangaluru: Alert: Water level dips at Thumbay, to last only for 10 days

Mangaluru, Mar 19: Water level at Thumbay is coming down and the water is only sufficient for 10-15 days, says the report from Mangaluru City Corporation.
The water is supplied to city from Thumbay dam which is situated at Thumbay on the way to Bantwal.

Mayor Kavita Sanil on March 16 had stated that there would water rationing in city as the water was only sufficient for 20 days from that day. The water was scheduled to start from March 20.

But even before the water rationing could be executed, water level has come down to 4 feet, which is alarming.

The release of water from AMR dam is yet to take place as the deputy commissioner has to approve it. It is said that MCC has already applied for the same and the process has started.

Though the AMR and Nekkilady dams can come to the rescue to some extent, only rains can solve the water woes of the city residents.

Mayor Kavita Sanil said present water stock at Thumbay is sufficient only for 10-15 days.

    W/o water no city can prosper! Here the situation is getting worse by the year!

    Without taking any radical steps, but just tinkering with the present resources will not give any solace!

    With more n more skyscrapers coming up we r headed to a dangerous zone!

    W/o water the ability of it to attract investors will go for a toss! After all who would like to live in such a place by investing heavily!
    Heavy damage to it's image had a already been done!

    First and foremost try to use available water judiciously. Stop 24 hour supply immediately, cut to 12 hours per day. wastage is very high. people re using for watering plants and washing cars indiscriminately. make rain water harvesting mandatory for all buildings.

    Few days back the water was suffice for 20 days. After a week it is for 10 days. In an another I think it will be for 3 days and the real trouble comes to Mangalore people for drinking water. Our New Mayors magic.!

    Catastrophic water shortage situation with monsoons 2 months away!!

    Water is the most important commodity w/o which nothing can be done!

    Unless some very radical measures r not taken by hiring top notch consultants, like from Israel, we r heading towards disaster in the coming years!

    Moreover, there were recent reports that this n almost all other modes of supply r contaminated with high levels of fecal matter!

    Even in rural areas, wells which were once having sufficient water till start of monsoons, going dry due to unchecked n rampant drilling of bores mostly by areca farmers to boost their production, this "short term" abundance is a precursor to situation turning into a disaster in the near future!

    People should think that w/o adequate water supply the attraction to the city is dwindling whatever the other developments/ positives!

    Amount of water coming to the river is the same. What has increased is the consumption. Too many residential towers, too many industries, too many migrants. If this trend is not controlled, we will have many many more problems, not only water.

    It's a shame that despite being blessed with abundance of rain and overflowing rivers, there is no drinking water in the city right at the beginning of summer. Any initiative to store or divert river water is immediately opposed by people who dont understand those projects. But strangely there is no strong objection to companies consuming lion's share of the water.

    I stayed at Ahmedabad for 50 years(1956-2016).The population of Ahmedabad is more than 70 lakhs (more than ten times of Mangalore) the rainfall many times is less than 12 inches in a year( ten times less than Mangalore), yet there was not a single day when we did not get water. The river Sabarmati used to be totally dry 9 months a year!(now it gets water from Narmada river).There is no desalination plant nor there is rainwater harvesting in 99% of the buildings.Where did it get water from?
    Water is obtained from the under ground water table. There are French wells(radial wells) under the Sabarmati riverbed and a large number of bore wells.
    For this the water table has to be recharged. There are a number of lakes ,rivulets and water bodies, which are deepened and desilted every year before monsoon.
    In Mangalore , forget desilting, there are a number of constructions including multi-storied that have come up on lakes and water bodies including 'Toads'. The Municipal authorities should demolish these unauthorised constructions ruthlessly, and desilt and deepen the water bodies. Already Mangalore has a large number of wells, these will be recharged and people will get enough water.
    You have to work all around the year instead of waking up in March.
    Do not blame the rain gods blame corruption,lack of foresight and lack of planning and hard work!

    We can not blame construction for water shortage! Where construction industry and civil engineering related people go??? Very important is plan and conserve water in order to minimize such grave situation! Most rivers in Udupi are full of water due to vented dam! Irony is this blocked water is full of garbage. Thousands of house drain leads such river and dumping yard for daily generated garbage! Look this water from any vented dam bridge....floating garbage bags, plastics, plastic bottles and so on very close to sewage pond resemblance! Hope our citizens realize and live Sawch Bharth campaign!!
    At may native we have a dedicated garbage pond and mostly plastic and glass segregated as much as possible and garbage incinerated periodically and making it a manure with burnt clay!

    Even though we receive such nice rainfall there is no plan of rain water harvesting. Make compulsory to dig a well to all independent houses and buildings, See that all the rain water flows in the well irrespective to weather the water is used or Not.No water should go to the drain, just see the results.

    Dig wells to get drainage water? In my surrounding in surathkal I know atleast 4 wells are polluted because of the newly laid underground drainage pipe leaks!!!!! This corruption has not left even the drinking water. God Save Us

    Last mayor said enough water is there, present mayor is giving multiple statement,finally blames on rain. This water issue will be the big racket on money making for the future of manglore.

    we already have experiences on last year so our politicians knew that 3 months let the people to suffer again so that they can sit and count the cash.

    Plenty of UN-education people leads city corporation that is why we are not improving.

    On one side there is not enough water for drinking and on other side construction of buildings goes unabated , All our leaders are busy in either foundation laying or ribbon cutting. What about yettinahole? what the experts say now? still another 80 days till the district gets full monsoon and if rain comes also how much? trees have been cut, 90 percent green cover is gone. youngsters stay on the mobile - dont leave whatsup, or snapchat, No water no problem may be we can buy mineral water or desalination plant is coming up in district.
