Police arrest man for Irish tourist's murder

Panaji, March 15 (IANS): Less than 24 hours after an Irish woman was found murdered in south Goa, police on Wednesday claimed to have cracked the case with the arrest of a history-sheeter, Vikas Bhagat.

"We have arrested Bhagat. He has confessed to raping the victim and later killing her in order to hide his identity," Deputy Superintendent of Police Sammy Tavares told reporters here.

According to the police, the 25-year-old deceased had come with a friend and had participated in Holi celebrations in coastal Canacona village, known for its popular beaches, before being found dead on Tuesday.

Police, suspecting rape, have sent the body to the Goa Medical College near Panaji for post-mortem.

"The body was lying in a pool of blood without clothes and there were injuries on the head and face," Deputy Superintendent of Police Sammy Tavares said.

Bhagat has been booked for murder.

It was not Irish, it was a British tourist from Liverpool. And the comments by british on this article is insulting. I have cut and paste some of them below:

Maria278, Melbourne, Australia, says, "I was in goa for NYE this year and my god there were a lot of creeps around, i was with six of my girlfirends and we made sure we never went anywhere alone during this few days not even to the bathroom, sounds a bit over the top but in all honesty we didn't feel that safe, and the manger of the hotel we were at warned us constituently to have out wits about us. I have spent a lot of time in india but when the big festivals and events are happening you have to be seriously careful "
Baz, Sunderland, United Kingdom says "India is a dangerous place. A lot of tourists seem to underestimate how much so. "

Farrelli, London, United Kingdom says, "India and rape seem to go hand in hand"

Lia, Bath says, "India sounds like a horrible place to visit for white women."

ITOLDYOU, London, United Kingdom says, "Stop visiting India; unless their stupid authorities come to some sense & ensure tourists safety. Goa is no longer a popular destination."

RoyaltyBecause, Coventry, United Kingdom says "I don't understand why people choose to go to India for a holiday. The country is known for terrible crimes against women."

Being a Mangalorean with ancestral temples in Goa, it hurts so much to read such comments about India and Indians but who cares? Politicians are only interested in power and police are backside lickers. our own women folks are not safe; how can we ensure the safety of foreigners who visit India?
