Chitradurga, Mar 11: The police personnel from the district raided a vehicle in which huge amount of cash in demonetised currency notes was being transported at SBM Circle, Challakere in the district on the evening of Friday March 10. They arrested two persons and confiscated currency notes worth one crore rupees comprising of demonetised currency notes.
The arrested persons happen to be Nagaraja (37) and Vijayakumar (36), both from Ballari. They had arrived at Challakere in a Mahindra Xylo vehicle from Ballari and had transferred the bags containing currency notes to an auto rickshaw. They were moving in the three-wheeler towards State Bank of Mysore when the police intercepted their vehicle and arrested them. The bags containing cash were taken into custody by the police personnel. An accomplice of the duo however succeeded in fleeing from the town along with the vehicle.
Nagaraja, the police have learnt, happens to be an employee of a real estate firm located at MMDC Extension. Vijayakumar is an auto rickshaw driver. Currency worth Rs 60 lac made up of Rs 1,000 notes and Rs 40 lac in Rs 500 currency notes were taken into possession from them.
District superintendent of police, Arun Rangarajan, explained about the operation at a press conference held at his office on the night of Friday March 10.
