Daijiworld Media Network-Mangaluru (RJP)

Mangaluru, Mar 7: The first phase of the partial parallel taxiway at Mangaluru International Airport has become functional with effect from Monday, March 6.

Air India Mangaluru –Mumbai flight number AI 680 was the first aircraft which used this facility.

Airport director J T Radhakrishna said that the time to reach the runway and waiting period at the runway will come down drastically thanks to this facility.

A valley with the depth of 30 metres was filled to create this taxiway and it took almost 18 months to complete the work.

Its a table top airport. No chance to increase the length of the runway as both the sides are on the edge of cliffs...! That place has a limitation...So no point discussing the point...!

Lets discuss the quality of service at the airport, harassment by officials etc. No chance of shifting the airport in near future.

No matter how many meters you keep adding, the Airport is at an awkward location. If we are frightened of entertaining the very thought of possible shifting the Airport to some other location we are likely to keep doing the patchwork!

Also need of the hour is to install two screening machines for incoming passengers, especially in order to avoid 1 to 2 hours at times in the early morning and passengers waiting in the Q with personal belongings without nights sleep!

The need of the hour is to shift Mangalore's airport to an entirely new location and away from his hill. The runway cannot be extended as it sits on top of the hill and due to 50-100 feet drop on either side of the runway.

In order to accommodate a larger 787, A330 or A350 we may require at least 9,000-10,000 feet long runway as against the current 8,000 feet long runway.

How long will AAI keep filling valleys around a hill to expand the airport? It will have to stop at one point in time and we will have to look at alternatives.

The normal terrain required to build a safe airport is flat land with adequate spill over area at the end of runway.

That's good news and hope this parallel taxiway will run smoothly. I have travelled several times to Mangalore from various destinations, but the landings is very rough and scary many times.

This is indeed good news !
If time to reach the runway and waiting period at the runway can come down drastically, surely cost of time/fuel saved will COMPENSATE the project cost.
Infrastructure projects are necessary for economic growth and surely viable in our nation for the population is too big.
