Puttur, Feb 23: Personnel of the rural police station here, driven by a mission to spread awareness about the need for two-wheeler riders to wear helmets without fail, have undertaken a plan to visit 17 villages in their jurisdiction and alert people riding two-wheelers without wearing helmets by presenting roses to them. This initiative was undertaken in view of the fact that a large number of two-wheeler riders have overlooked the fact that wearing of helmets had been made mandatory since April last year.
The programme undertaken near Sampya police station on Wednesday morning was initiated by Sampya station police sub-inspector, Abdul Khader, near the station.
Khader stopped two-wheeler riders without helmets, handed over a rose to each of them, and exhorted them to wear helmets without fail. "The Supreme Court has made it compulsory for every two-wheeler rider to wear helmets without fail in the interests of the safety of the riders and pillion riders. During accidents, helmets can save lives. It is the duty of every citizen to uphold and obey the law of the land. Violating this law is punishable with fine, but we will not impose fine for a week. We are releasing you with a warning," he told the violators.
The riders who accepted the roses, confirmed that they have noted to wear helmets henceforth. The programme of creating awareness continued for about half an hour on Mani-Mysuru state highway.
This programme will continue for a week. The police said that awareness programmes will be undertaken in villages like Volamogru, Kedambady, Bettampady, Keyyur, Sarve, Mundur, Nettanige Mudnur, Paduvannur, Badagannur, Ariadka,Panaje, Nidpalli, Aryapu, Kuriya, Madnur etc.
Abdul Khader said that everyone knows that wearing of helmets is compulsory. He noted that initially everyone had started wearing helmets, but as time passed by, many have stopped the practice of wearing helmets. "We have taken up this programme to remind them of the law of the land and request them to fall in line. Those found violating law even after a week will have to pay fine," he added.
