Thiruvananthapuram, Feb 22: The local police took into custody two youngsters from Napier Museum premises here on Tuesday February 21. The men in uniform also charged the young man and his female friend of indecent behaviour and vulgar conduct.
The duo, identified as Vishnu and his girl friend, who insisted that they had done nothing wrong in the eyes of law, stood their ground and chose to go live on Facebook. They insisted the two female police constables and a male constable to spell out what was the indecent act they were found indulging in. The police personnel were found groping for answers, unable to give any reasons for the detention of the duo or say what was the offence they were held for.
The video posted by Vishnu on Facebook is spreading far and wide, with over 65,000 views within a few hours since it was posted. In the Facebook post, Vishnu can be seen seeking to know from the police what exactly was the incident they saw involving him and his friend that they have branded as vulgar and indecent. One of the female cops can be seen thinking for a while before saying that the two were found hugging and kissing. Vishnu is seen firmly telling the cops that they cannot be led to the police station without at least another person from the premises who can vouch for what wrong they had done which the police term as unlawful.
The cops then come up with another statement that the girl can be allowed to go only with her parents, to which the girl retorts by pointing out that she is 23. She also wants to know from them what would they do if she was an orphan. The police personnel can be seen reiterating that the couple was indecent, but Vishnu keeps insisting that they were only sitting together with his hand over her shoulder. He can be heard stressing that this does not fall under the purview of either indecent or vulgar behaviour.
Kerala police are known to try their hands at moral policing frequently. The youngsters involved this time tried to prove that they were not wrong, by resorting to air the happenings through Facebook and show to the world how Kerala police behave. There have been incidents in the past in which the police have taken young people into custody for things which they feel are indecent, without caring for what the law says. Often the youngsters are brutally beaten up or taught a lesson for offences which the police feel are indecent, without bothering to check whether the offence is is punishable in the eyes of law.
