Udupi, Feb 17: The protest by students of Poornaprajna College on Friday February 17 against the management over the alleged suspension of a BCom lecurer ended with the management relenting and agreeing to retain the lecturer.
However, Durgaprasad Mayya, the lecturer in question, said that he would rather resign than continue teaching in the college.
Mayya joined Poornaprajna College two years ago. It is said that the students, on hearing that he was being suspended over allegations of question paper leak in internal exams, boycotted classes on Friday and protested in large numbers.
As the protest intensified, the management failed to prove the charges against the lecturer and assured the students that the Mayya would not be suspended and that he would be allowed to retain his job.
But pained at the allegations, Mayya asked the management to give him experience certificate and that he would resign.
"I have been targeted by the management. They (management) want to appoint another lecturer, so they are trying to replace me. I have done nothing wrong. I have not leaked any question paper," he said.
"I am ready to prove my innocence by taking oath at Sri Krishna Math," he asserted, adding, "I am here to teach children and I am doing my best to fulfill my duties. My parents were poor and I have worked hard and struggled a lot to reach this position. Let the management give me experience letter, after which I will resign and seek job elsewhere."
Mayya's mother too joined the protest.
After Mayya and his mother left, the students also dispersed and the protest came to an end.

Udupi, Feb 17: Degree students of Poornaprajna College here boycotted their classes on Friday February 17 and staged a protest against the college management over the suspension of a BCom lecturer of the college.
It is being said that lecturer in question, Durgaprasad Mayya, has been suspended relating to the allegation of leakage of internal examination question paper. It is said that some students of the college were told about this suspension by Sri Vishwapriya Teertha Swamiji of Admar Math on Thursday. The management representatives reportedly told the students that their ultimate aim is the welfare of the students. They allegedly said that they are looking into an incident in which 38 students who gave different answers for a question were given same marks by the lecturer, which was not justified.
Secretary of the college management, which is run by Admar Math Education Council, G S Chandrashekhar, who counselled with the students, told them that the college is doing everything, keeping in mind the good of the students. He also wanted the lecturer to show proof about the claim that he had been suspended. He advised the students against resorting to agitations based on rumours.
Police contingents have been deployed at the spot to avert any unsavoury incidents. Student leaders are in talk with the college management on the issue.
