Udupi, Jan 29: An unidentified bike rider stabbed 2 auto rickshaw drivers over an argument and as a consequence one of them died on the spot and another has been admitted in hospital with serious injuries.
Auto driver Hanif (54) is the person deceased. Shabbir (55) is the injured person.
The incident took place on Sunday, January 29 at around 12.30 am at Karavali Circle here.
As per the information available now, Hanif was going towards Nittur from Karavali Circle, allegedly driving on the wrong side of the road. A bike rider stopped and questioned him on this. An argument took place between the two. Meanwhile, another rickshaw driver Shabbir joined Hanif and supported him.
The bike rider suddenly brandished a knife and stabbed Hanif and Shabbir indiscriminately. Hanif died on the spot while Shabbir was rushed to government hospital at Ajjarakad. Later he was taken to KMC hospital in Manipal.
The unidentified bike rider fled from the spot.
Hanif's family members said that the culprit was not alone but was with other three people as per the information they received.
Udupi city police have registered a case.
Police suspect role of injured person
Police sources said that they have reasons to believe that the auto rickshaw belonging to Hanif was not stopped for moving on the wrong side as alleged earlier. Police believe that Hanif and Shabbir had parked their auto rickshaws properly before the unfortunate incident.
The presence of three knives at the murder site proves that the bike rider might have planned the attack. Police have suspected the role of Shabbir in the quarrel either directly or indirectly. They say that they believe that a fight broke out between Hanif and Shabbir and they stabbed each other.
Shabbir is in serious condition and police are yet to take his statement.
