Udupi, Jan 29: An unidentified bike rider stabbed 2 auto rickshaw drivers over an argument and as a consequence one of them died on the spot and another has been admitted in hospital with serious injuries.

Auto driver Hanif (54) is the person deceased. Shabbir (55) is the injured person.

The incident took place on Sunday, January 29 at around 12.30 am at Karavali Circle here.

As per the information available now, Hanif was going towards Nittur from Karavali Circle, allegedly driving on the wrong side of the road. A bike rider stopped and questioned him on this. An argument took place between the two. Meanwhile, another rickshaw driver Shabbir joined Hanif and supported him.

The bike rider suddenly brandished a knife and stabbed Hanif and Shabbir indiscriminately. Hanif died on the spot while Shabbir was rushed to government hospital at Ajjarakad. Later he was taken to KMC hospital in Manipal.

The unidentified bike rider fled from the spot.

Hanif's family members said that the culprit was not alone but was with other three people as per the information they received.

Udupi city police have registered a case.

Police suspect role of injured person

Police sources said that they have reasons to believe that the auto rickshaw belonging to Hanif was not stopped for moving on the wrong side as alleged earlier. Police believe that Hanif and Shabbir had parked their auto rickshaws properly before the unfortunate incident.

The presence of three knives at the murder site proves that the bike rider might have planned the attack. Police have suspected the role of Shabbir in the quarrel either directly or indirectly. They say that they believe that a fight broke out between Hanif and Shabbir and they stabbed each other.

Shabbir is in serious condition and police are yet to take his statement.

How they got those knives at 12:30 am? Is it legal for auto drivers to carry such knives? No wonder you cannot argue with them when they refuse to take you to certain destinations, when they ask for more money that the meter fare, etc. I am not accusing all auto drivers. I have met with many very good ones. At the same time we cannot say the same for some goonda types among them. Their vehicles should be checked occasionally for weapons of any kind.

Police are trying to safeguard the real culprits by blaming injured driver as the main culprit. This case is required by investigated by higher authorities and not by local police.

Surprising that knife ready with bike rider means some kind of conspiracy behind it. Minds made of cowdung largely active when they see poor autodrivers or bus conductors. The courts or police cannot guarrenty the justice when human life lost but when any cattle or dog get damage the same courts will respond very fast providing justice even without evidence. thats why abraham linchon has to change the definition like ............. means of the animals,by the animals ,for the animals

Crime is condemnable but the fact is after completion of the one way road most of the people doesn't know the rules of traffic and how to drive in one way road. Traffic police department have to do some action in this regard.

Foremost, we are supposed to adhere to a disciplined driving system, some cannot drive on wrong side and let other follow rules. Secondly, if we go about stabbing people over offences such as wrong side driving, someday humans will cease to exist. Why the man had to carry a knife ?

Please don't take law in you hand, we have the police, courts and law of the land to govern us. Also, please do not bring communal angle to the episode, road rage is not limited to any community, its a cancer that needs to be terminated.

I have been to that area quite frequent during my recent holidays and due to the closure of udupi malpe highway people ply in opposite direction to avoid lengthy way to cross the road, but killing a person for just an argument, my god where we are going. My be he is sole bread earner of the family.

Very true. Killing people as a consequence of road rage is unjustifiable.
But, suppose the auto coming in wrong side had collided to a biker/pedestrian causing loss of life, that is also unjustifiable. The members of locals/kith & kin of family are forced to take law into their hands, for the police and law have always failed to take the case to logical end!
