Nigerian President urges women's football team to defend African title

Abuja (Nigeria), Dec 1 (IANS): Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari has urged the country's national football team to defend their title at the ongoing 2016 African Women's Cup of Nations in Cameroon.

Buhari, using his official Twitter handle, said he looked forward to the AWCON final match on Saturday in which he hoped the Nigerian female soccer team, also known as Super Falcons, will be crowned as 10-time winners of the competition, reports Xinhua.

"Our Super Falcons have made Nigeria proud again. The entire country looks forward to the 2016 African Women Cup final on Saturday," the President tweeted.

The Nigerian ladies defeated their South African counterparts 1-0 on Tuesday to qualify for the final against host nation, Cameroon.

Nigeria's Desire Oparanozie scored the only goal of the match on Tuesday in the 53rd minute, after a goalless half-time.

The AWCON final will be played at Ahmadou Ahidjo Stadium in Yaounde, the Cameroonian capital.
