Mangaluru, Sep 23: The field of speech, language pathology and audiology is dedicated to the understanding of normal communication and hearing processes, the application of that knowledge to the identification, treatment, and prevention of communication disorders in children and adults.
Speech, language pathologists and audiologists provide a range of services, which include both assessment and management of communication disorders and also play a major role in public awareness and prevention of these disorders.
In honor of the 'International impaired week' a speech and hearing camp was organized at Father Muller Speech and Hearing College. The inauguration programme was held at 9.45 am at the surgery seminar hall of the OPD. Fr Richard Coelho, administrator of Father Muller Medical College Hospital and Father Muller College of Speech and Hearing was the president of the function. Dr Mahesh Bhat, HOD department of ENT, professor Akhilesh P M, principal FMCOSH, Sr Janet CNO, Darryl deputy CNO, Malini OPD supervisor and the speech and hearing faculty, students of BASLP College and the patients along with their attendants were present for the ceremony.
The inauguration started with a prayer song. Professor Akhilesh P M welcomed the gathering. Fr Richard Coelho inaugurated the camp by lighting the lamp. Fr Richard Coelho addressed the gathering with the message that speech and hearing is a noble profession where one renders service to the general public. It is a field where we empower people with speech and hearing problems to become an integral part of society. He congratulated the staff and students for organizing such a programme of creating awareness and providing service. Dr Mahesh Bhat HOD ENT expressed joy for conducting such a programme in which we can help the people to come out of the stigma of using a hearing aid. Sr Cynthia proposed the vote of thanks.
31 patients attended the camp on the first day and underwent various tests. The students of BASLP had prepared a number of posters, models and charts to educate the camp beneficiaries. Thanks to their effort and zeal.
