Mangaluru: Minor assaulted, guilty imprisoned

Mangaluru, Sep 16: Mangaluru’s second additional sessions and special court has awarded a sentence of three years imprisonment and a fine of Rs 5000 to daily wage labourer, Naveen (21), finding him guilty of sexually assaulting an 11 year old girl in Sullia in January 2014.

The girl had returned from school and gone to a local grocery shop to fetch salt. On her way back from the grocery shop, Naveen and his teenage friend forcibly took her to a cashew nut plantation and sexually assaulted her. Police arrested Naveen on a complaint from the girl and filed a charge sheet in the court.

A case booked against the co-accused was referred to the juvenile justice board as he was a minor.

Nearly 19 witnesses were questioned in the court. Special government prosecutor C Venkataramana Swamy argued in favour of the prosecution.
