Udupi, Sep 3: Teacher’s Day was celebrated by Catholic Educational Society, Udupi diocese at St Mary English medium campus, Kannarpady here on Saturday, September 3.
Speaking to the gathering, district-in-charge minister Pramod Madhwaraj said, “Education has great value in the world. Dakshina Kannada and Udupi district secured first and second place in PUC examination respectively. Most of the education institutions are run by Catholic Educational Society. Their contribution to educational sector is immense. Teachers are pillars of any society. They mould students and give shape to national development.”
“According to Human Development Index, only three villages are above average in development in state; they are Bengaluru city, Dakshina Kannada and Udupi. Our education index is competing with western countries.”
“Education is the key to all success. Catholic institution is open for all communities. This is a centre of communal harmony and centre of excellence,” said minister Madhwaraj.
Bishop Gerald Isaac Lobo in his presidential address said, “Teachers play a crucial role in development of educational institution. Student should put more effort to succeed. Hundred percent results are not always important. What is more important for an educated person is that he is able to live peacefully in society. Only then education gets true meaning.”
“Student should get moral, pragmatic and religious education. All these help intellectual development of a child. Today’s children do not have the attitude of gratitude. Student should learn to use three words ‘Thank you’, ‘Sorry’ and ‘Please’ in their life, according to Pope Francis,” bishop added.
Ramachandra B Nayak, additional sub-director, PU education department briefed about Sarvapalli Radhakrishna and wished well to all teachers present on the occasion.
Retiring and retired teachers were felicitated on the occasion for their remarkable work. Saplings were distributed to top scorers on the occasion.
Colourful dance performances were staged to showcase talents of school students.
Fr Lawrence D'Souza, director of Catholic Education Society of Udupi was present. Fr Fred Mauscuranhus welcomed the gathering.
