M'llore: MSEZ Likely to Include Bajpe A'port in SEZ Corridor

Mangalore, Dec 7: Mangalore Special Economic Zone (MSEZ) has decided to include Bajpe International Airport in the SEZ corridor. The proposal of the same will be put forward in the next SEZ board meeting which will be held in New Delhi, said the sources.

Sources further said that Prasad, managing director, MSEZ and Kumble Narasimha Prabhu were impressed when they were explained about the benefits of having duty-free shops at the Airport.

The duty-free shops offer value-added services to passengers and are exempted from taxes. Such shops have an advantage of getting indirect financial support. It is source of profit for the airport as well as the airlines, the sources informed.

Karnataka Urban Infrastructure Development Finance Corporation (KUIDFC) is also planning to build a double-lane road through Shree Devi College premises to the new terminal building which is planned at Kenjar.

    SEZs created out of agricultural lands of poor folks for economic prosperity, for me is not a prosperity at all. We need agricultural lands for sustainability of food and I am afraid we can not grow food in barren lands.

    I would have encouraged SEZs if these were created out barren lands. Who are the victims of this prosperity? The poor people and their lands of livelihood. Who are the benefactors? The rich and affluent.

    Each news item about this SEZ shocks me even more. What, duty free shopping ?? Poor folks are being kicked out of their homes for this kind of an venture. Isn't there any conscience left anymore. How can people be forced out of their homes for this kind of a extravagance. Its revealing to know that our elected representatives think that duty free shopping is going to benefit the 'aam admni' of Mangalore. What next malls, discos and bars in SEZ. This SEZ is an exercise in forceful transfer of land from the poor and marginalized to those who are already wealthy, all this in the guise of public good. Mahathma Gandhi must be turning in his grave seeing the plight of our polity today. Of what use is this unjust development, where our own brothers and sisters have to be evicted out of their homes so others can make more money. I never expected Manmohan to be doing this.

    The beauty and the advantage of Special Economic Zone is that the entire concept brings new ideas for not only economic growth but also a broad scope for future developments, expansions and innovations. The concept brings ideas for new infrastructure developments which paves way for new roads, new transportation opportunities, and most importantly new job opportunities. Airports and seaports are the main backbones of economic links that allows people to travel, people to communicate and people to decide what is best for the people and for the country.

    Many leaders also have to play a role that is selfless with a dedication for growth and expansion of the country. We all have to keep our mind and hearts wide open for progress and prosperity. Our new generation will be the main recipients of the new changes. In the whole process, there are always concerns that relate to health and environment, safety and security, and most importantly the ability to withstand so many new challenges to mankind to focus on future growth with a commitment to work together.

    May God continue to bless Mangalore in every possible way, so that India will move forward with lot of progress and prosperity for the benefit of mankind. This will be a win-win situation for everyone that needs progress.
