Mangaluru, Jul 25: The inaugural function of 14-day long cement sculpting camp organized jointly by Karnataka Shipakala Academy and Mandd Sobhann was held at Kalangann here on Monday July 25.
The renowned artiste and writer Daya Victor Lobo inaugurated the camp.
Speaking on the occasion, he said, “Since ancient time, human beings have been expressing their feelings in the form of art. Sculpting is also one among them which is present from mammoth buildings to the tiny coins. Indian sculptures began from Harappa and Mohenjodaaro civilizations and has evolved and has been glorified through various kingdoms and dynasties.”
President of the program and president of the Karnataka Shilpakala Academy, Mahadevappa Shambhulingappa Shilpi said, “The sculptors must not go behind the honours and laurels. The honours must come in search of the sculptors.”
Addressing the sculptors who have come from the various parts of the state, he said, “You must be self dependent. You are the sons of Saraswathi. Be humble as the ancient sculptors during the times of the kings and you will be honoured like them.”
Speaking during the press meet held after the program the Gurkar of Mandd Sobhann said that the theme of the camp will be the Konkani culture. “Sculptures of the chariot of GSB's, Manddo from Goa, Gumat from Konkani Catholics and many other sculptures depicting the culture of various Konkani speaking communities will be sculpted in cement and will be kept in the Kalangann premises.”
The camp director Gowrishankar BG said that the sculptures will be sculpted using the raw materials cement, bricks, steel rods, sand etc similar to the construction anatomy.
The president of the Karnataka Shilpakala Academy Mahadevappa Shambhulingappa Shilpi informed that more than 40 camps across the state have been organised by the academy in the two years related to the sculptures of various kind.
The concluding ceremony of the camp will be held on Sunday August 7 at 5 pm in the same premises.
The camp co-ordinator Dr Virupaksha B Badigera, president of Mandd Sobhann and others were present on the occasion.
