Mumbai, Oct 26: Reeling under serious terror threats, Mumbai police have decided to acquire hi-tech Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) System to counter sabotage and terror-related incidents in the megapolis.
To beef-up the present obsolete Protection and Security (P&S) apparatus, police would be equipped with Non-Linear Junction Detectors (NLJD), Deep Search Metal Detectors (DSMD) Telescopic Manipulators (TM), Ballistic Shields, Royal Arms Disruptors, Anti-Sabotage Testing/ Render Safe Procedure Kits, Bombs blankets/ suits and a robot among other equipment, to detect and destroy any sort or plastic or vapour explosive now being widely used by terror outfits in the country.
Police Commissioner DN Jadhav told DNA that the acquisition was part of Rs12-crore modernisation plan.
At present, this sort of advanced equipment is being used by the Indian Army, Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) and the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF). Mumbai police will be the first civilian force to have it, police sources said.
Non-Linear Junction Detector is widely used in counter-surveillance. EOD search operations are used to detect hidden electronic devices such as remote-activated receivers to trigger explosives.
The Anti-Sabotage Testing Kit is basically a bomb disposal tool kit containing a comprehensive selection of more than 60 hand tools for access, investigation and render safe procedures during EOD tasks. The complete Kit is supplied in a soft-sided carrying roll with easy-grip handle for convenience and quick tool selection. The hand-carried tool kit is also applicable to search tasks.
The small mobile robot being acquired by the force have numerous life-saving military and civilian applications such as remote monitoring and EOD. The Royal Arms Disruptor can be used to force open packages, disable explosive charges, and destroy fusing systems.
The ballistic shields are commonly used for protection from thrown objects or blunt/edged weapons and firearms.
The Telescopic Manipulator is another modern device to detect and dispose of explosive. and containers.
