Tipu Jayanti: Of politics, controversy and tension

By Chris Emmanuel D'Souza

Mangaluru, Nov 15:
Over the last few days, Karnataka has been rampaged with a flood of rage and savagery over a trivial issue of the government's honouring of the epic and controversial emperor Tipu Sultan. Although, the decision of the state government to hold an honouring ceremony for a king who ruled two hundred years back in history is at best questionable; the reaction to the event all over the state is disturbing and contemptible.

The protests actually triggered in the country’s most volatile, sensitive and polarized regions, Dakshina Kannada and Udupi. Here, outfits belonging to the Sangh Parivar and the BJP condemned the chief minister's decision to respect Tipu Sultan, whom they referred to as a religious bigot, and also warned the government of serious consequences. In addition, a few Mangalurean Catholic groups and institutions also expressed their displeasure at the state government’s decision. The Catholic community of Mangaluru had been at the receiving end of Tipu Sultan's worst kind of savagery; the community was captured, enslaved, imprisoned, tortured and killed systematically during the second Anglo Mysore War (1780-1784). Three of the historical churches namely the Milagres Church, the Rosario Church and the Kirem Chruch at Kinnigoli were decimated and raised to the ground. Tipu had alleged the Catholic community of spying and guiding the British. As a matter of fact, the British officers favoured the Catholics economically and politically and in return Catholics of the region supplied vegetables, rice, fruits etc to British soldiers.

A large number Catholic women were used as Tipu's sex slaves and were also distributed as wives to Muslim officers. The brutality of Tipu Sultan against the Mangalurean Catholic community very nearly resembles the modern day ISIS treatment of religious minorities. In addition, Tipu also attacked and brought down many Hindu temples during his reign. Most of the modern day Indian historians omitted this part of Tipu's inhumanity, and patronized him as a freedom fighter, who bravely stood against the onslaught of the 18th century British Empire. But thanks to the internet, where one can find an alternative history, mostly from the accounts of British officers of the time like James Scurry.

Seemingly, it is clear that the Congress-led state government did play the tried and tested policy of religious appeasement to strengthen the vote bank. But, then the opposition party and the Hindutva brigade stormed out their anger, by vandalizing, looting, plundering public property and by making preposterous communal statements on public platform, thereby deliberately creating religious tensions. The tension then spiraled across malnad region with a spark.

During the Tipu Jayanti ceremony, Jnanpith Award winning playwright and filmmaker Girish Karnad stated that the newly built Kempegowda Airport at Devanahalli should have been named after Tipu. The 24/7 noise polluting Kannada news channels flashed this part of the speech several times and accused Girish Karnad of making irresponsible statements and offending the Vokkaliga community’s godlike figure Kemepegowda. This further escalated tensions and demonstrators burned Karnad's effigies and demanded immediate apology from him. An unknown individual had also tweeted a death threat to Karnad, forcing the state to provide police protection to the writer at his residence. Karnad humbly apologized to the public and cleared the confusion saying that he had no intention of hurting anybody’s sentiments or any designs to smear Kempegowda; but had only suggested Tipu's name, since the emperor was born at Devanahalli. Even then, the opposition mainly the BJP and the Hindu right-wing outfits continued to hurl abuses and make below the belt comments against a literary figure whose biography is decorated with momentous contribution to Kannada language and culture over the years.

Perhaps, it is a tragedy that such treatment has been meted out to literary Icons like Karnad, in a state that has been the recipient of eight Jnanpith awards and has the reputation of being labeled as the cradle of progressive literature and reformist thought. The Tipu episode was a litmus test for Karnataka’s intellect, communal harmony and political stability. The drastic rise of religious intolerance and mob violence in the country rightly accused by many writers and intellectuals gets vindicated by the current pressure cooker situation in Karnataka.

The violence has now expectedly floated to Dakshina Kannada and Udupi, the regions that have made national and international headlines for the same reason. At a time, where responsible citizens need to take steps to restore sanity, some of the politicians have persisted making dangerous sectarian comments. They have decided to apply salt to the wound, by mongering hate and thus making the society bleed. They float like a butterfly and sting like a bee, roaming in bullet proof cars and are guarded by nation’s highest level security, and yet people get swayed. Before the conversion of Mangaluru as a Smart City, it seems likely that rain of fire has already struck the city.

Friends, like any community, there were scores of Freedom Fighters from Catholic / Christian Community as well. You may just check the Google search if you want. Jochim Alva is one such. Kaka Baptista is another. Suffice to say, every community has good and doubtful elements - history records it (at times the rulers distort it to suit their view point). Let us see what we can do at THIS given moment to build our great nation.

When the Indian forces set out to liberate Goa from the Portuguese in 1961, almost all Catholics of Goa supported the Portuguese. Very few freedom fighters from the Goan Catholic community were there.

Even today the Goan Catholics want to take Portuguese citizenship. This is deplorable.

In the name of Tippu sulthan the society is getting polarized. When we were students Tippu sultan was portrayed as a freedom fighter by historians . No body objected then. No one celebrated his birthday either. This year Govt wanted to celebrate his birth day to score some brownie points among muslim voters . The fact of the matter is Muslims are not interested in celebrating birthdays instead they want empowerment. On the other hand some historians especially right wing and British portrayed Tippu Sulthan as a religious fanatics. If he were to be religious fanatic he wouldnot have granted funds to so many mutts and Hindu religious places. Yes prosecution against Christian is totally wrong but it is done because Christians are perceived by Tippu sultan as British supporters and so he prosecuted them. But In fact Christians are the people who serve the society irrespective their religion most because of their free thinking and they easily assimilate with people. In the same way Christians might have helped Britishers at at that point in time. Here the problem is perception. Please try to forget the issue we need to move on. If we keep racking about the past even great Akabar Ashoka Krishnadevaeraya, and all others have to be labelled hatemongers. we must understand that in Monarchy war is common . In war people fight and get killed so for that attributing religion is not fair. If you go back even Portuguese have prosecuted GSB Community and many got converted into Christianity. So please try to bridge don't make a big issue out of it. Of course the Govt has to be blamed first

    Mr. Albert, Mangalore,
History is that which is based on evidence and facts without any bias or prejudice. Yes a few Christians served in the British Army which also included Hindus and Muslims. These were mere soldiers commonly called as Sipais or Sepoys. To say Christians spied for the British was a false allegation and a pretext to wipe out an entire community. One of Tipu’s objectives was to cleanse his kingdom of all infidels. Today the large numbers of Muslims in Kasaragod, Kannur, Kozhikode and Kodagu were originally Hindus converted during Tipu’s reign.

Coming to Portuguese issue, there were no Konkani speaking Catholics before their arrival in Goa. Majority of them were converted by force. Roman Inquisition was strictly enforced and there was widespread persecution of Non-Catholics. 500 years ago all Konkanis were Hindus - GSB, Kharvi, Kunbi, etc. As a result today we see around 30 % Catholics in Goa whereas in parts ruled by British and French, the Christians comprise less than 3% since they never used force to gain converts.

In Islam celebrating birthdays is not allowed. We do not celebrate the birthday of our beloved prophet who had preached against this. Politics is being played by Congress, BJP and all political parties and outfits. To blame muslims or Tippu Sultan is wrong as the worst tyrants were the British who came up with divide and rule policy of planting hatred among hindus and muslims and British being christians do we then have to blame christians for the division of India or for the hatred between the hindus and the muslims. No we have to forget what happened during the reign of the kings and look forward for the betterment of our country. It looks like we are going backwards and due to unemployment among all religions the people find time to protest and cause trouble. I just hope that God puts sense into all these culprits.

Who wanted tippu jayanthi except congress...
Tippu is not a freedom fighter...but he acted according to norms in those days....ofcourse it was barbaric ...but there is history behind that...when Portuguese came out on expedition in to old world for spices and dominance...they carried their legacy of Inquistion which they applied on jews later muslims in Iberian peninsula...when first they reached shores of India they found same moors(muslims) aka "moirs" (still used by goans on muslims)dominating western coasts of indian ocean who were their bitter rivals...Vasco da Gama was the first to apply his harsh rules of inquistion first on local muslim populace of western India starting from malabar region......series of fight had taken place between moplas of malabar coast who were working for Zamorins naval forces and portuguese army...In response many masjids were razed down in malabar..and many were taken as slaves to portugal.....In one case Vasco Da gama even advised whole ship full of Hajj piligrims returning from mecca to be gutted down with fire comprising of women ,children and wealthy merchants...When portuguese army reached Goa it did same to the Goan konkani muslims..here to same policy of destruction and forceful conversion was followed making them to migrate southwards and northwards...Later the inquisition was apllied to local hindu populace of goa...when Tippu arrived the prominence in trade lost by muslims across western coast was again restored....He too was no less sympathiser with his enemy...there was series of migration happened from goa to mangalore region first during portuguese period then during bijapur sultans who held goa briefly..and the most significance part of migration of goan catholics to mangalore happened during when marathas invaded portuguese territory...
history has all positive and negative side...let us not dig it for our present politics..congress govt or any other party need to understand...this my bit other side of history

Tippu was worse than Saddam Husain, Gaddafi,Bin Laden even worse than ISIS chief. Tippu must be tried posthumously for his atrocities & Genocide instead glorifying the butcher.
My dear Author for your information, Kirem Church was not demolished instead got stiff resistance and brutal fight from the Neighboring BUNTs community with homemade Swords. The result of the fight was so furious that the Muslim soldiers of Tippu's army ran for life living behind their belongings same like Saddam soldiers did during Kuwait's Desert Storm. For that support still date particular Bunts family has been accolades before the annual church festival. For more details please visit Kirem Church.
Now it is certain that Nidderamaya’s firm FALL for glorifying the butcher.
But the ISIS sympathizers will never agree the truth.

The author is depending on the historical facts from British officers of the time like James Scurry.
Can visualize how much justifiable it will stand. A Britisher writing about Tipu Sultan whose enemy was British Army. Can we ever expect any praise from any enemy?

Come on guys, dont twist the history as per your own norms.

The author in his article is thanking Internet for collecting the subject. Does he not aware that most of the sources in the Internet we find are unauthentic, which carries not validity. Any layman can write any thing as per his/her mindset, without ever having any authenticity of the facts they write about.

Just to make our brain realize.
For Indians all those who fought for Independent India from Britishers are called FREEDOM FIGHTER, but the same persons for Britishers were ENEMIES. So clearly it depends on to judge about a person to which side one belongs.

When you write against any personality, kindly present the true fact with proof. Don't just blindly follow something which has been said, which in English is termed as RUMORS.

Show the proof, documents of those era if any you carry which clearly states of his atrocities. If one doesn't has, then they better not quote bad of any personality to defame them.

Not to forget, Tippu's army was not just built by Muslims alone. His army had n number of Hindus involved. His cabinet has n number of Hindus as Ministers. Now tell me, which of a Hindu will destroy his own temple where he worship them as GOD?

May God, shower us the right knowledge and spread peace and tranquility in our India and the rest of the world... Let the falsehood perish and truth prevail... Ameen.

What was the objective of introducing this jayanthi which was never introduced in 60 years of congress rule ?
    1. Knowing Tipu is controversial person , and with ongoing debate on Tolerance this will polarise muslims and pull them away from JDS towards congress
    2. Another major objective is Tipu is projected as champion of Ahinda, to divide OBC hindus who are attracted towards BJP. This backfired by bringing Kempegowda into stage.
    3. Congress Govt. has failed in areas like governance, managing farmer issues and controlling corruption (Anjaneya).. so this was an opportunity create unrest and divert attention. It was well known Kodavas and catholics who were worst sufferers will object and this will utilized by VHP/RSS.
    2. Catholics do not have mush say, even if they have objections they cannot leave congress and have to accept this.

Please note in COASTAL KARNATAKA, neither hindus nor muslims can neglect each other, coz all business/education/hospitals.... are all managed/owned by mix population, in a nut shell everybody is interdependent.
