Moscow antidoping lab chief resigns

Moscow, Nov 11 (IANS): Russian Sports Minister Vitaly Mutko accepted the resignation of the Moscow Antidoping Laboratory head on Wednesday following accusations against the country of breaching anti-doping regulations.

"Acting Moscow Anti-Doping Laboratory director Grigory Rodchenkov tendered his resignation. The minister accepted the resignation. The accreditation of the laboratory was temporarily suspended," Xinhua quoted Mutko's advisor as saying.

On Monday, the World Anti-Doping Agency's (WADA) Independent Commission published a report alleging widespread doping among Russian athletes and corruption involving sports officials. It also suspended the accreditation of the Moscow Antidoping Center for six months.

The Russian sports ministry issued a statement on Tuesday vowing to cooperate with international athletics authorities in investigating the allegations.

Meanwhile, world police organisation Interpol has announced it will coordinate a global investigation into WADA findings.

The Russian Anti-Doping Agency is due to prepare and send to WADA a report explaining reasons for the violations highlighted in the commission report before November 17.

The All-Russia Athletics Federation is also expected to present its explanations to the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) before Friday, when it meets to discuss the scandal.
