Mangaluru: City's first triathlon held

Mangaluru, Oct 13: City's first triathlon was conducted by Ground Sport Fitness on Sunday, October 11.

Triathlon is atriathlon is a multiple-stage competition of 3 continuous and sequential endurance disciplines. It involves swimming, cycling and running in immediate succession over various distances.





The triathlon started with cycling from Nantoor to Tannirbavi beach and back, followed by running, and then swimming at Eden Aquatics and Sports Club, Mangaluru.

The event was divided into 2 categories – Sprint Triathlon and Amateur Triathlon. Sprint Triathlon comprised of Swimming of 750 meters, Cycling of 20 kilometers and Running of 5 kilometers. Amateur triathlon comprised of swimming of 250 meters, Cycling of 10 kilometers and running of 2.5 kilometers. There were over 60 participants of varying age groups. Anup Shetty won the first place with a time of 1 hour 26 minutes closely followed by Ashwin D’Silva at the second place with a time of 1 hour 28 minutes. Among the girls, Ashel D’Silva and Sinchana Gowda took the lead.

The triathlon was an initiative by Ground Sport Fitness to spread awareness on the benefits of an active lifestlyle. Participants were trained for the triathlon for 4 weeks to condition their bodies for the event under the supervision of Suraj Shetty, head coach at ground sport fitness.

The gym conducts regular sessions on Functional Training which improves speed, strength, endurance, power, agility, coordination and flexibility.
