Udupi, Sep 11: Tulu Cultural Fest `Tuluminadana' 2015 was organized by Karnataka Tulu Sahitya Academy, Mangaluru, Tulu Kuta Udupi, Praahyasanchaya Udupi, Tulu Sangha M G M College, Udupi, NSS Unit and Tulu Sangha of Girls Government PU College Udupi on Sunday September 10 at M G M College campus, Nutana Ravindra Mantapa Hall here.
The function was inaugurated by Udupi district in-charge minister Vinay Kumar Sorake. Many political leaders were present.
As part of the programme the cultural fest promoted the traditional tribal game `chennemane' (wooden board game) competition for the public. This game dates back 2, 500 years.
"In order to be included in the UNESCO list a seminar on the game 'chenne' will be conducted to increase awareness of the game. Efforts are on by the various Tulu associations in this regard. As of now the game itself is fading and is treated as non existent," said prof S A Krishnaiah.
As part of the Tulu festival, students narrated ethnic Tulu rhymes, proverbs and riddles. ‘Tulu pachchevana’ (Tuluvas green garden) planting of saplings was held at the M G M campus.
A full day's variety programme related to Tulu culture sponsored by Karnataka Tulu Sahitya Academy, Tulu Kuta, Prachyasanchaya and NSS students of Udupi Colleges were part of the program and made it a success.
Janaki Brahmavar said, "Parents should encourage their students to learn Tulu. Tulu text book is yet to be in circulation in Udupi. Many of the students learn Tulu as a third language." The script is not important for the development of the language. Due to lack of publicity, Tulu is lagging behind. All the required effort of converting the Tulu script introduced by K P Rao to unicode is in progress.
Nearly 20 members participated in the month long Tulu learning course. Last year the fest was conducted in 7 taluks and this year Kundapur taluk has been added.
Jayakar Shetty, Indrali was present at the press meet.
