Panaji, May 8: Beleagured Congressman Churchill Alemao who successfully contested 2004 Lok Sabha elections from South Goa’s Mormugao constituency on Tuesday resigned as a member of parliament to fight the ensuing elections on Save Goa Democratic Party ticket.

Alemao, former chief minister, also quit the Congress before putting in his papers to Lok Sabha speaker Somnath Chatterjee.

The MP worked against Congress over the last year after he led several agitations opposing projects initiated by the Congress-led state government. He spearheaded  agitations against international airport at mopa in north goa, which forced the government to stall the project.

What had fuelled his anger against the party is the denial of Navelim constituency ticket for him for the ensuing state legislative assembly elections.

Alemao had consistently attacked Congress party and refused every attempt of reconciliation even when All India Congress Committee general secretary Margaret Alva intervened.

“I am feeling relaxed now… I will concentrate on election campaign for my party," Alemao said.
