Udupi: Failure in exams drives 17-year-old to suicide

Udupi, Jun 26: A 17-year-old college student allegedly ended his life at Pethri near Brahmavar here on Friday June 26.

The deceased has been identified as Mohit Shetty, son of Balakrishna Shetty, a resident of Pethri.

Mohit was a first PU student of SMS College, Brahmavar.

It is learnt that Mohit had failed in first PU exams, but out of fear of being reprimanded, he had reportedly told his parents and other family members that he had passed.

However, on Friday, his parents were summoned to the college, and only then did they come to know that their son had failed in first PU.

Mohit who was unable to bear this turn of events, allegedly hanged himself at home.

Brahmavar police have registered a case.

    Feeling very very sad to see this little fellow lost his life and left us . He couldn't manage the events in front of him. Parents must always tell their children " We are there with you in good and bad times". Its too late now .

    Dear Praveen,
    It is a situation where you should not blame the boy. Yes may be ,he was in a bad company of friends or whatsoever. If he was guided and consoled in the right manner he wouldn't have taken this dreadful step. The way u have reacted is exactly the reason these children get insulted , let down and take suicide as the only option. Its not about blaming,rather find the root cause and counsel.
    It is very sad to see that 70% of the people react , as if failing in an exam is a crime. To err is human. Remember every child is gifted and has a talent which needs to be nurtured well and not judged by mere exam marks. In western countries they give importance to practical aspects, not just marks, that's the reason they flourish in every field.
    Very sad to know how weak our systems are....

    There is a beautiful life for every marks holder and also without marks.those who score high marks fail in their lives.i have seen so many of them. most of the students who get high marks are bookworms. exams from book and exams of life are too different.never underestimate a child who is bad in studies.that child only will reach to greater heights than the good scorer

    i was failed 6th & 10th standard, i was crying and told mother i failed, but mother said that don't cry not a big deal, after that i took a big breath. note for parents please don't put much pressure to your children for studying, parents should support their children

    We have to teach our children like they do in US and European countries that just mugging up things and then spitting out in exams is not called success!. The very problem lies here where every parent thinks that only studying in class room is required to be successful and every thing else is useless!. Education by itself is nothing!. People have succeeded in business, music, painting etc etc and many who have succeeded have not got any formal education!. Think of Rajkumar, Mohammed Rafi, Bismilla Khan, M F Hussaain, Dhirubhai Ambani etc etc and you will see that all these greats didn't even complete 3rd standard!. Schools have to use counselors to counsel both parents and children and show them that there are many other ways to make money(this is what we call success!) if one is not good in studies!. Every one has a hidden talent but no one helps to nurture it!

    I have seen some of my friends and classmates who were very bad in studies, are earning lakhs of rupees per month in business. Though they are failed in studies have succeeded in life. They are earning more than that of a doctor or IT engineer. So it is foolishness to commit suicide.

    Now a days its difficult to fail in exams but very easy to pass. I think this guy must have spent his time full year with bad company of friends and spoiled his life. When he could pass SSLC how can he fail in 1st Puc. I think its all about bad company.

    Very sad news. Now a days the younger generation are not taking their life seriously. Their parents should give them confidence, guide them for better future and should talk to them in what they are interested in rather pushing them to follow parents want. But in some cases both the parents go for work and the child is left alone he has no to one share his feelings. Parents are only considering marks every one cannot be good at studies. I can give my own example even I failed in first PU but my parents supported me a lot in the hard times yes there was lot of pressure. But Alhamdulillah it was a turning point in my life and I went on to complete my post-graduation in one of the best college in D.K.

    Students, I was nothing so good in studies, probably now I am doing better than some of my friends who use to score well. Mark's remains in mark sheet only. Real exams yet to start in life , be bold and get ready to face it.

    It is really sad that a young boy was driven to end his life. This age and time, every step is made into competition. It is the responsibility of the parents to understand the capability of their child and direct them towards that path. Even schools play great part in the formation of young ones. Every child that is born is not destined to be an astronaut, engineer or a doctor .. but, they can go forward on their own chosen path, if they are supported and lead a happy life.

    Dear parents,whenever your son or daughter scores less marks or fails in a subject, embrace them and tell them "you are more precious to me than your marks". I am sure your love filled words will make them to study hard and succeed in life. Threats and restrictions were working during our time, today's children are different. I am so sad, a young life is lost for nothing. May his soul rest in peace and my thoughts are with his parents.

    Sad sad.May his Soul rest in peace.Only if he would be honest and told parents about his failure?failing in exams is not a big issue.he could have applied for re view of his papers ,many times there happens mistakes.Or could have appeared for exams again.But should be honest in all things.When once lies,later noone will believe the Person.Heartfelt condolences to the parents.other side parents also should be sensible with their children when less marks or no distinction achieves.when ones character is good,without high marks can be a Student will be loved.Everybody is not a genie.

    My heartfelt condolences to the bereaved parents and family of the boy. May God comfort them in their hard time heal their wounds help them come out from the sorrow, pain and agony.
    Very sad, growing youth, hope of the parents lost life only because of failure of exam.
    In race many will run, but all will not win, even they will try again and again to win.
    So if once failed can repeat second time, why has to take life? Why want to suicide? if failed parents will be tensed, may upset and little shout because waste year, finance. later they will adjust, be ok.
    How our hands five fingers are different shapes and measures same way everybody don’t have same kind choices, interests. Some in education, some time in that all not all subjects, some like technical, some like different way, there are lot of ways, in career, so please don’t lose hope and kill yourself.
    person may go alone, behind that person loved ones has pass through hell of sorrow, pain, and agony, please youngsters, before taking step at least think about your parents, . Have pity on them. Please be cool,
    Many even in business lost become like zero, but again tried and came up. Up down comes for everyone, so please don’t lose hope
    All has to learn that No failure no successes No pain, no gain, No trial, no triumph. No war no victory, No challenge no breakthrough. No patience,no ration.

    FEEL SAD FOR THIS YOUNG BOY. PROPER COUNSELING IN SCHOOLS AND COLLEGES SHOULD HELP THE YOUNG LIVES TO FACE CHALLENGES OF THESE KINDS. PARENTS AND TEACHERS SHOULD GIVE ENOUGH COURAGE INCASE OF A FAILURE THAN PRESSURIZE AND GET THE NEGATIVE OUTCOME OF THE FAILURE. RIP

    It's sad to see young life gone away because of education. May his soul rest in peace. Kids don't fear of marks. this is only man made. But your life given by god. Many business man' or women's or politician not even passed tenth standard. Still they progress in life. Think big .dream for that. Work on lt you will be successful. Look for the doctors they spend nearly crore for their education. But still a uneducated person hire them. That is the life.no one live with out any one.
