Puttur, Jun 12: The people of Paltady in the taluk were flabbergasted when a person whom they believed had died, appeared in front of their eyes alive.
Sammu (50), who had been believed to have breathed his last, and a corpse which his close ones identified to be belonging to him was cremated, and post-funeral rituals aimed at praying to the Lord to rest his soul in peace were performed, sprang a surprise by coming home in flesh and blood.
Newspapers had carried details of bodies of certain unidentified persons who had died at the government Wenlock Hospital in Mangaluru, and whose bodies had not been claimed by their close ones. Out of the photos appearing along with the news, family members of Sammu found that the features of a person whose name was given as Shakeel tallied with Sammu from Paltady. Presuming that the body belonged to Sammu, they went to Wenlock Hospital, claimed the body in question, and performed the last rites and other rituals.
In addition to identity marks on the body and facial features, the fact that one of the eyes of the body claimed by them was closed just like Sammu, made his relatives to believe that it was the body of their family member. Sammu used to stay at home only a few months every year, while the other times he used to roam around different places and was not available for contact. Likewise, he had left home several months back, and had not returned, when the photo of Shakeel appeared in newspapers. The family members, who had searched for Sammu at various places and had failed to gather details about his whereabouts, came to the conclusion that the unidentified person whose features looked like Sammu was actually Sammu himself.
In the meanwhile, Sammu was found from Javagal in Hassan district. He was brought home on Thursday. Everyone was taken by surprise to see that a person they believed had died, was alive. At the same time, no one knows the actual identity of the person who was cremated by the family, and also the family and place to which he belonged, although the name given by hospital to him was Shakeel.
The family members thereafter visited Wenlock Hospital and told them about what had happened, it is gathered.
At the same time, the family will be left with the hope that the person whose final rites had been performed by them would have rested in peace.
