Abu Dhabi: St Paul's Church, Musaffah to be inaugurated on Jun 11

Media Release

Abu Dhabi, Jun 10: The newly-built Catholic church dedicated to St Paul in Abu Dhabi’s industrial district of Musaffah will be inaugurated on Thursday June 11.

The first Catholic Church in the UAE, St Joseph’s Abu Dhabi, was opened in February 1965, and March 2015 marked the golden jubilee celebrations of the event. The ruling family of the Emirate has always been generous and it was their graciousness in donating a piece of land to build a place of worship that thousands of faithful even today can enjoy a place of prayer and sanctuary.

Now, 50 years later, yet again due to the kindness and open-handedness of the rulers of the Emirate, the second Catholic Church dedicated to St Paul in Abu Dhabi’s industrial district of Musaffah is all set for inauguration.

Sheikh Nahyan bin Mubarak Al Nahyan, the UAE minister for youth, culture and community development will inaugurate the Church and premises on Thursday June 11 at 7.30 pm in the presence of Cardinal Pietro Parolin, the secretary of state of Pope Francis, Archbishop Petar Rajic, the Papal Nuncio and delegate to the Arabian Peninsula and Bishop Camillo Ballin, apostolic vicar of Northern Arabia. The presidential adviser for religious affairs, Sheikh Ali Al Hashemi is also expected to be present along with other dignitaries, officials of the civil authorities, municipality, consultants and contractors.

This will be followed by the blessing of the Church in a solemn liturgical celebration on Friday, June 12 at 10 am with the Catholic community of Abu Dhabi. Nearly five thousand people are expected to attend.

The name of St Paul has great significance in the history of the Catholic Church in the Gulf which is dedicated to the apostles Peter and Paul who together laid the foundations of Christianity in the first century. The apostle Paul was sent by Jesus Christ to bear his name to the nations and was named by Jesus as a ‘Vessel of Election’, thus signifying his special commission to spread the aroma of the knowledge of Christ. Christians throughout the centuries gratefully remember this apostle for the enduring foundations he laid for the practice of the Christian faith. The apostle Paul is also the patron saint of Bishop Paul Hinder, the apostolic vicar of Southern Arabia, who recently completed a decade of fruitful service as the shepherd of Catholics in the UAE, Oman and Yemen.

Following the traditions laid by St Paul, this Church will be indeed a place where 'petitions, prayers, intercessions and thanksgivings for everyone, including the citizens of this country and its rulers, for their peace and prosperity' (1 Timothy 2:1-2) will be offered by worshippers to God.

Congratulations to all Catholics living in UAE on the newly built Catholic Church dedicated to St. Paul in Abu Dhabi. A big salute to the rulers of this great country UAE for showing the true spirit of Islam in allowing everyone to follow what they believe in and what faith they follow. In UAE we have Masjids, a Temple in Dubai for Hindu faith and Churches for Christian faith, and above all people of all faiths have the privilege to celebrate & enjoy their festivals.

To understand the true spirit of Islam in regards to religious tolerance in Islam, this verse from Noble Quran and the dealings of Prophets is more than enough. “To you be your religion, to me be mine.”

The Qur'anic Point of View - Islam, like Judaism and Christianity, believes in prophets and messengers of God. One inter¬esting way of understanding the Islamic view on freedom of religion is to look at the role of the prophets and messengers.

Had they been sent to forcefully bring the people into their teachings? Were Moses, Jesus and Muhammad ordered by the Almighty to impose their teachings upon the people by sword? Absolutely not! Look at the Qur'an, the holy scripture of Islam the revealed words of God where He clearly outlines the duty of his mes¬sengers by saying: “(And as for My messenger,) there is no (obligation) on him except to deliver (the message). God knows what yon expose and what conceal” (5:99).

Once the people of Mecca said to Prophet Muhammad that if god did not want them to worship idols then why He does not forcefully prevent them from doing so. Then God sent the following message: “(O Muhammad) This is not a new excuse those who went before, them made, the same excuses. Is there anything upon the messengers except the dear conveying of the message” (16: 35).

So we see that from the Qur'anic point of view, the mission of the prophets and messengers of God was not to forcefully impose their teachings on the people but to guide them and ask them to accept God with their own will.

Dream come true venture of many parishioners -The beautiful New St Paul's Church..! Mussafah developed for over 30 years as an industrial area on the mainland south of the city of Abu Dhabi. In the last 15 years big residential areas have been added and many people have moved from the Abu Dhabi island to Mussafah and the new suburbs in the airport area.
There are about 4,000 Catholic families and about 20,000 Catholic laborers around Abu Dhabi. Many are guest workers from Africa, Bangladesh, India, Pakistan, and the Philippines, but some are Arabs. Hope this church will be a place for their spiritual needs. May the good Lord bless us all.
