Bengaluru, Jun 10: At a time when different political parties have been claiming that candidates supported by them have won majority of seats in the gram panchayat (GP) poll held recently in the state, the intelligence report has said that in reality, Congress-supported candidates have humbled others in the race.
The report prepared by the intelligence department is the basis on which chief minister, Siddaramaiah, and other Congress leaders have been relying on in repeatedly shouting from the rooftops that Congress dominated the GP election by bagging a lion's share in the face of bitter challenge posed by BJP.
This report has placed BJP and JDS in second and third spot in that order behind Congress. Out of 93,736 seats which went to polls, results were declared in case of 92,985 seats. Congress has bagged 42,055 seats, leaving behind BJP with around 30,000 seats and JDS, which is at a distant third spot with 13,245 seats, the report has analyzed.
Belagavi has the highest number of GP seats at 8,453. Out of them, 8,299 results have been announced. 3,551 seats have gone to Congress, with BJP getting 3,496 seats. JDS could get only 107 seats in this district. The intelligence report says that candidates backed by Maharashtra Ekikarana Samiti (MES) have got 350 seats in this district.
The remaining 7,532 seats have been shared between CPI, CPIM, BSP, Raita Sangha, MES, RPI, SDPI, and others. Among them, MES is leading with 350 seats, relegating Raita Sangha to second spot with 145 seats. SDPI has won 56 seats, CPM has bagged 18, with one seat each going to BSP and RPI, the report points out.
